I'll say it simpler for you. Not just Thais, there are plenty of farangs asking for handouts. Where I live, mostly Asia for the last 50 years. I was once told in a situation you be better off if it bothers you to just pay a few Thai guys to speak to him nicely? than waste your money going to court. With considerable experience including current loans to family, I would not change a word. This country is such a low income zone that regardless of intentions to pay back money borrowed, the reality is that most barely earn enough to eat. No savings or insurance or holidays for many. This is why hundreds of thousands of "Thaksin loans" are rolled over each year. Some of my extendef family members have to borrow the interest payments each year and some will die owing that money and some of them will lose land held by banks in security. Most Thai never possess enough money to even learn good financial habits. We support and even employ cousins and assist wherever possible but it is like draining the ocean with a teacup. The need to borrow is great but the capacity to honour intentions or commitments is lacking. BTW. Someone pointed out that the OP is vague but probably lent that money to a non-Thai!!!! I used to give some money to beggars but I stopped a long time ago because it just creates more of them, you can see many stories of beggars who finish work (begging) and go home in their car to their nice home.!!
