Barging in front of the handicapped - is this the famous "Thainess" we hear about?

A fed up Thai wheelchair user has gone on Facebook to complain about her own compatriots.

 

She asked somewhat rhetorically:

 

"Is this the famous consideration shown by Thai people? Is this your sense of humanity?"

 

A set of pictures showed people on their way to work crowding a lift and leaving the handicapped user stranded.

 

Even though there was a sign saying show consideration to the handicapped.

 

The poster on the fan page of "Khit Dee 4.0" said they were all able bodied people who could use the stairs.

 

She said she got so fed up with this happening to her every day on the way to work that she decided with the help of a friend to take secret photos to shame her fellow Thais.

 

She said it was not set up but what really happens to her all the time.

Patience and manners are not great attributes of the Thais.

Queuing in a shop, like 7eleven, or holding a door open for one, with no acknowledgement, are good examples.

Well i understand the lady, i see it many times.

Strange thing is i find 50% of the people here will go out of their way to help, the other 50% are pil+++ks.

I find it is mostly middle age to older women who are inconsiderate.

When i go to big C on my scooter, some older women deliberately block me with their trolleys, some even leave them in my way and walk off getting things off shelves a fair distance away.

Me-Ness... A perfect explanation! It is always all about them (Thais). Now this it NOT to say that all are the same, but come on... how many times have you seen people pushing in front of lines at the market... elbowing their way to whatever without any regard to others around them. You see it happen at the markets, 7/11s, bus stations, check-in areas at hotels, airports, and do not get me started on the breakfast lines at hotels. The worst is that you see it on the roads every dam day! The sad thing is that these are Thais and not the Chinese that actually  have a reputation for doing exactly this and the Thai people complain vehemently about that behavior. As a Farang, I get that maybe I will be treated a bit differently. Am I fine with it? NO. But I get it. However, I pull the rug out from those that do it to me by saying something nice... in Thai... that is along the lines of, 'Oh, go ahead. No problem. I am not in a hurry". That floors them and I get the Thai... 'I am ashamed face'. So, open doors, help people, be kind and polite... not superior. But if you see someone who is handicapped... help them and make it known that it is proper behavior to give in to their needs before your own. Oh... and be loud about it if you know what I mean! Educating the "Me-Ness can be so refreshing!

Saw an old lady get on the skytrain this morning, she assumed nothing but it was evident she was frail.

 

No one moved for her, in all fairness no one could see her as they all had their phones glued to their heads. I managed to to grab the attention of a couple and gesture they should give up their seats, to which one did.

Actually the social decay is both obvious and rapid. 7 years when we road the BTS with our first baby there were alway several passengers volunteering to surrender their seats. 4 and a half years later with our second baby it became a rare occurrence.

I don't think it's deliberate as in, "Oh look, a farang cripple, sod him" as much as it's an in-bred lack of consideration (for some) and the total lack of spatial awareness (for pretty much all Asiatics). I have no restrictions in my mobility but these biddies, slowly shlep-shlepping around Big C with their elbows on the handrail of an almost empty cart, soaking up the air conditioning and suddenly stop and wander off to browse washing up liquid do my head in as well.

 

Same way as they drive and park outside... ie, just stop driving.

Unfortunately necessary in a country which does not penalize motorcyclists on the pavement (sidewalk) and at times encourages it... 

 

Thus, near a school (BKK Prep I believe) they installed this which prevents motorcyclists from riding down the pavement (sidewalk) at the school entrance, but still permits wheelchairs and push-chairs. 

 

I think this has now been copied elsewhere too.

I've usually only seen this among the Chinese tourists. My girlfriend amused me by shooing some people out of their seats on a songteaw, so that I could sit down. I am not disabled, but I AM in my late sixties. The GF is 46 and has a tone of authority about her from her job as a restaurant supervisor. It's funny to watch her shoo people out of their seats, but a bit embarrassing, too.  ?

When my Thai wife and I went to the USA the first time, she panicked when I crossed in front of a car in a mall parking lot.  The car, some distance from me, stopped as I knew it would and she was stunned.  After she saw this as standard driving behavior, she said "I can see my so many Falangs get hit in Thailand".

How can you post that, sorry you should be ashamed coming out with that nonsense.

Clearly you are not disabled, but fully able, or you would never post something like that.

Look again at the photo it is clear she is waiting to get in the lift.

On the road or in queues anywhere it is pronounced "Me First-ness"    Don't tell anyone, because they like Thailand to be the originators and "hub" of everything, but I think the Chinese do it so much more and better.  Thais are just poor copiers of China in this and, well pretty much, everything!!

I'm surprised they got up for you. In my experience, generally, they don't show foreigners the same social graces they do with each other.

If you were the same person only Thai, and in your late 60s, you would get far more deference and respect from Thais. They hardly show farang any such respect. 

 

And, this is one of the things I find most disgusting about the culture. All the social etiquette seems to be based on fear of anyone higher up the social hierarchy. And as farang, we generally have no power in Thai society, so I imagine it's convenient for Thais to be rude to us. 

 

So, all their politeness is really not their true character after all. True character would be what they do when they don't think they must.

Probably in that same Big C, I've been known to move the trolleys of these inconsiderate buggers to the next aisle while they're not looking. Their look of confusion when they return to a vanished trolley is quite amusing.
