Granite counter top cleaner/hydrogen peroxide

Hi.  I have a granite countertop that has some oil stains on it.  It is 8 months old and  I guess I didn't seal it well enough when it was installed.

 

I would like to clean it and, according to youtube, you need to make a slurry with hydrogen peroxide and talc or baking powder and put on and leave overnight.

 

Does anybody know where to get hydrogen peroxide?  Have asked at numerous stores and pharmacies but they just look at me like I asked them to translate the dead sea scrolls.

 

In the home country we can get it at pharmacies but here they don't have a  clue what it is even if I write out the  chemical formula (H2O2); don't they teach basic chemistry for pharmacists?

 

Anybody have any ideas?  or  even if they sell some sort of granite top grease/oil cleaners?

Most pharmacies do not have a pharmacist on duty - just shopkeepers.  As said normal supermarket medications area often have it for sale.

 

Would be interested in an after report - might try myself if it seems to work.

Are you sure that's it Granite??? as Granite doesn't stain or mark. Marble or some Granite composite will mark but not Granite. I have had it on my kitchen work tops for several years and not a mark. I also have it on my driveway the car drives over it every day and that doesn't even have a scratch.

 

Suggest whatever you try do a small bit first just in  case it marks it even worse.

 

N/B you don't have to seal Granite. Marble yes but never Granite.

N/B you don't have the seal Granite. Marble yes but never Granite. 

We also have a black 'granite' kitchen work surface.  It is ruined within a few months... and it was very expensive.  How do you know the difference between granite and marble work tops?

 

We got it from the same company that fitted out last kitchen... and the granite is the same colour and texture.  At the old house we had it several years and no marks or problem.  At this new house its a mess.

 

I guess its how it polished in the factory.  We have had the company out several times but they make excuse that we put hot things on it, or cleaned it with chemicals.... all of which we never did.  Its got marks, circles, and lines on it from when it was polished at the factory.. and big patches appeared and spread over the months... also the shine has gone of some of it.  Real waste of time and money and the company is now not answering e mails or returning our calls.. after their attempt to 're polish' it failed... which was basically to smear it all over with some black oily stuff.

Granite by its nature is supposed to be impervious to liquids and it is....if you seal it.

otherwise like your carpets dont knock over the red wine.

 

I think they are suggesting HP because its a bleach. Obviously a stain other than clear is the one you will see.

I made a mistake of leaving a bag of mince to thaw out overnight....blood seeped in and a small stain....and my granite is well sealed!

You will not get it out but it will fade reasonably quickly.

You can check to see if your granite is ready for a reseal by dropping a small capful of water on the surface, if it stays there with that perfect meniscus for a minute then its good for a while longer, but if it disappears seal it.

Milk was always a good stain reliever, but it seems you may just need to do the disguise and re seal it

I used to have a Granite/Marble company in the UK so I can tell the difference at a glance.

There is no such thing as Black granite it's normally a dark grey that's been died with some sort of stain. Hence what they did when they tried to re-polish same and failed. If it's not done correctly in the first place it will stain or take the polish off. Seems that's what has happened in your case.

 

I would never advise Black for work tops the best stuff to buy here is the cheap Chinese Granite. Never marks or stains. What do I have on my drive well the Cheap Chinese Granite like I have on my work tops. The only problem I get with that is it blunts the knives. 

 

Have attached some snaps of Granite I have used you will also see the cheap kitchen cleaner I use that's on the work top to the left side of hob. Sorry if they are a bit dark but it's getting late. Also the drive and patio not a mark on anything.

That is only true if it has been sealed and the seal coat is still intact. 

 

Granite is a natural stone and all natural stone is porous the materials that causes the worst stains are oils and acids. If wiped off immediately the liquids will not have time to penetrate the seal coat

You shouldnt have any problem getting Chinese granite here since 95% of all Thailands granite comes from there.

The other much more expensive granites are coming in from India, and those deep red ones are quarried in Egypt.

 

Knives get blunt yes but granite is the perfect sharpening stone.

With knife in hand the wife alway runs it half a dozen times along the edge of the granite chopping board...and thats your lot on cutting edge technology

Thailand also does it's own granite but it's soft. Not up to the quality of the imported stuff and it will mark. But it is cheaper.

The most expensive Granite sold here is from Italy.

The Chinese Granite I have used doesn't need sealing. None of mine have been sealed that's on the worktops and on the patio. If you look at the snap of the drive nothing has been treated and that gets a real bashing driving my Tank's over it every day for some 10 years. The concrete between the Granite has stained and got a bit buggered but not the Granite.

 

I would never put acid on the granite intensionally but it does on occasions have vinegar/lime juice spilt on it. Also oil from the electric fryer.  That can be left for day's will make a mark but never stain comes off once dry with my cheap Kitchen cleaner spray. Followed by a damp cloth. We also put hot saucepans directly onto it and the only thing that does it cool the pan down. Bit of a pain with my hot gravy though.

I think you are getting confused with marble from Italy. There were very few granite quarries in Italy and at best limited to Sardinia. I  suspect they have already been depleted years ago, hence the big marble export market....mainly into the middle East developments.

 

There are no granite suppliers around Chiang mai supplying home grown granite, certainly not for kitchen worktops, so it could be they are developing garden and patio stones from it.

As you know its a very heavy product but very weak in tension, I have watched a team of men lifting pieces onto a truck and seen every piece break.

Thats why i suspect it will never be sold in worktop size pieces.

 

You really should seal the top surface, unless you pay for top quality monolith then the chances are you will have a conglomerate "sarkulaphan" like in the OP. The surface can arrive with very small chips and indents great for harbouri g dirt and spills.

I made a couple of chopping boards from the sink cut outs. I have never sealed the underside or the edges yet despite the fact the top and bottom is cleaned after every use, the underside looks grubby, salty, even mould could be engrained i dont know.

Anyway its hardly life and death is it?
