BERLIN (Reuters) - German Chancellor Angela Merkel appealed to European Union members to show solidarity to ensure the Frontex border agency has sufficient powers to be effective and help stop illegal migration, in line with European Commission plans.

"The question of fighting illegal migration means we have to strengthen external border protection ... that means also that the countries with an external border must give up some of their national responsibilities," Merkel told parliament on Wednesday.

"That requires a degree of solidarity, it is about people coming to us or our duty to make legal migration possible to help countries that are in trouble," she added.

Bit rich really, after basically telling the whole of the EU to fling the doors open....talk about a stunning 180. Admit it fraulein, you blew it.

The suggestion is not ‘tell[ing] the whole of the EU to fling the doors open’.

You made that accusation up (AKA you told a porkie).

It doesn’t take a lot of thought to understand that if European nations with their multiple shared borders are to tackle illegal immigration them they’ll need to coordinate their policies and actions.

Though the logic of that is evidently evading some folk.

Interesting to note that the EU are right on top of this. Not.

Not sure how you want to know what I like to read, or how that would even be relevant. You still didn’t provide any evidence that Merkel invited someone.

Merkel used her heart not her head concerning the asylum seeker crisis (there is a German expression for this). I believe Germany are now shipping many failed asylum seekers back.

Interesting to see Brexiteers on this particular wagon. As an anti Muslim bigot I am happy to see fortifications raised. In the UK, we will end up with fewer Europeans and MORE Muslims. Great!

Wish there were tweets by Winston Churchill about this sick person. SHE has turned on the magnet, by allowing undocumented people to enter the welfare system.

Article 16 a of the GG, the German constitution, bans asylum claims by people arriving from safe neighboring EU countries like Austria.

Most countries would not let me cross the border, without a passport. And guess what, the lack of ID is preventing deportations! What's wrong with her wish?!?

Well, as long as there will be a) higher payments in Germany and b) free movement within the EU, those accepted by Bulgaria won't remain there for long 555.

The article is dated 2015. At the time Merkel was endeavouring to assist an EU fellow member, Greece, who were totally overwhelmed and could no longer apply the 1990 Dublin Protocol. Merkel only offered waive through for Syrian asylum seekers, but EU external border countries also permitted travel North for North Africans, Afghans etc. It is a fact that Syrian asylum seekers / refugees have committed a far lower rate of crime in Germany than other asylum seekers and German nationals.

As mentioned before the huge numbers of people seeking refuge in the EU were on the road prior to Merkel's offer. Additionally the UN had warned funding for hosting asylum seekers in countries such as Turkey and Lebanon was completely insufficient and a considerable push factor; the warnings were largely ignored.

"...the warnings were largely ignored."

Ignored by Merkel as well?

After inviting so much instability, now she wants "solidarity". What a silly moo you are Mutti.

... While accepting anyone (passport optional) to waltz right in (fleeing Austria or some other safe EU country.

At the same time, she leaves the magnet on, attracting folks to come from all over the world. As the lack of a known identity assures an extended stay. Like for a Cameroonian man who has refused to cooperate when it came to applying for a new passport.

Even the UK is often springing illegals without passports. As some countries do take 6 months to replace travel documents (hello, China - wake up, UK government)

WTH, can't the UK insist on all foreigners bringing a 2nd passport which will be kept at the airport to enable quick deportations? And a bond paying for such potential deportations?!?

With free movement EU wide, those sent to say Bulgaria and romania are bound to vote with their feet and go to where they will get more benefits.

This fat person has brought untold suffering to Europe. Future generations will be scratching their heads to grasp the depth of her treason. (The German constitution, article 16 a GG, bans asylum claims from folks coming from safe EU countries like Austria).

Don't know about 'ignored', but obviously underestimated the potential impact on the EU. However, back in 2013 Germany had already commenced an intake of Syrian refugees, approx 12,000. Haven't looked up the specific funding shortfalls in the period 2011 - 2015, but even today donor funding requests by the UN for Syrian refugees is still massively underfunded.

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-mideast-crisis-syria-funding/u-n-warns-of-critical-gap-in-syrian-refugee-aid-this-year-idUSKCN1IW220

On the upside Germany is in the top five counties for annual UNHCR funding, as is the EU.
