BANGKOK, 24 September 2018 (NNT) - The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has been overseeing the construction of underground pipelines, intended to prevent flooding in the Sukhumvit area

Deputy Governor of Bangkok Chakkaphan Phiew-ngam, and executives of the BMA on Sunday inspected the construction sites of five pipelines along Sukhumvit Rd.. He said there are 14 pipe jacking projects in Bangkok and seven of the projects are in the Sukhumvit area. The projects’ contractors work from 10 pm - 5 am before returning the road to motorists in the morning.

The deputy governor said that he had instructed the contractors to always put safety first during the installation process in order to limit the danger to motorists and pedestrians. Mr.Chakkaphan asked the contractors to put up signs to inform people of the nature of the construction sites.

Meanwhile, the projects at Soi Sukhumvit 21 and 39 are behind schedule. The deputy governor therefore instructed the Department of Drainage and Sewerage to closely monitor the projects and urge the contractors to complete the construction on time.

The pipe jacking projects at Song Sawat, Yaowarat and Charoen Krung Roads are expected to be completed before the others, in mid October this year.

Why not doing this during the dry season instead of doing it now while there is still a big chance of flooding.

Than it will not be Thailand is they use logic or common sense...

just like what has happened in Pattaya yesterday where flooding on Sukhumvit rd turned the whole place into a river and that after digging the place up for long long time...

pipe jacking

I know what hijacking is but can anybody explain what pipe jacking is?  Is that when somebody steals pipes of some sort then holds them for ransom?  Forgot, I also know that lumberjacking is but doubt that that has anything to do with toppling them by cutting them down as usually they are already lying on the ground.

Definition - What does Pipe Jacking mean?

Pipe jacking is a method of laying new pipes by assembling specially designed pipes on site and using a hydraulic jack to push the pipes into place. In contemporary technology, there are not many limitations besides the traditional engineering and economic concerns. It provides a pipe as structurally sound, flexible and as watertight as conventionally installed pipes.

BMA to seek Cabinet approval for two more drainage tunnels

By The Nation

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration will seek Cabinet approval for two drainage tunnels jointly costing more than Bt3.9 billion, deputy BMA governor Chakkaphan Phiewngam said Monday.

Chakkaphan said the BMA would soon ask the Cabinet to approve the construction of a tunnel to drain water from Klong Thawee Watana costing Bt2.274 billion, and the Saen Saeb Canal tunnel, requiring an investment of Bt1.75 billion.

The Saen Saeb tunnel would be built from the canal to Lat Phrao Soi 130 while the Klong Thawee Watana tunnel would be built from its bottleneck section part to a nearby river.

Chakkaphan said the two projects would be 50-per-cent financed by government so required Cabinet approval.

He said another project to build a 9.4-km tunnel to drain floodwaters from Nong Bon swamp to Chao Phraya River would be completed late next year and would alleviate flooding problems in Suan Luang, Bang Na, and Phra Khanong districts.

Being cynical, I assume this means a way to syphon away commission paid by contractors who are 'awarded' any subsequent construction projects. Must be a new way to describe money laundering.

Sections of pipe which are lowered into place then pushed along to form a long tube/pipe underground using hydraulic jacks !

Relies also on having a good idea of what is lying in the path of the pipe being 'jacked'

Without the details of what other services/cables/drains lie in/on the way I would reckon some risks are involved.

They've addressed the risks by putting up signs - s'all gonna be fine.
