Colonoscopy virtual - where?

Featured Replies

At 71 don´t want to do a full colonoscopy, virtual is preferable.

Is any hospital good for that?

A virtual colonoscopy every five years. This involves taking a CT scan of your abdomen and pelvis, which is less invasive than a conventional colonoscopy

Any major hosputal should be able to do this, I know Bumrungrad is.

But be advised that there are drawbacks:

1. Less accurate than colonoscopy in detecting small growths.

2. If a growth is seen they can't remove it then and there as can be done in colonoscopy. This is a very big drawback as you could pay for this only to still have to undergo colonoscopy to take out and biopsy polyp or other growths found.

3. Radiation exposure of CT is fairly high. And there are small risks associated with the contrast medis that must be injected. So all in all, not safer than colonoscopy if that was your concern.

You don't feel a thing with colonoscopy, they give IV sedation.

You might like to consider Vejthani if you're concerned as to who will be doing the colonoscopy.  Just make sure it's the doctor in that section who looks like a beauty queen that does it for you and you can have happy dreams while sedated.  Another tip would be to take some orange juice with you so that you can mix it with the sea water flavor drink they get you to swallow before doing the check up.

Actually I had a full abdominal (cancer) CT scan at Vejthani about 8 weeks ago and found the drink very easy to take - good flavor.  Also done with enama as last check - bathroom attached to CT scan room thankfully.

I wonder if that drink was different from mine?  I can pretty much eat / drink anything but had a hard time drinking whatever it was they gave me.  I would have gladly drank seawater instead ????  Hope your scan went well for you.

Believe the drink was flavored (although was fasting so easier than normal to drink a lot).  CT did not show any spread of a cancer so was best news could expect.  Later operation to remove the cancer appears to have been successful so next scan in six months.

Have you considered cutting back on meat to limit the chance of your cancer coming back?  I've been looking into the benefits of changing my diet this last 6 months and now made a complete change in what I eat for health reasons.

So far so good with the new diets and all my blood work came back normal after starting then completely new diet.  Also lost 10kg without even trying.

Thanks Richard for your well meant suggestion. Fortunately no cancer so far. Only for general check up.
