Special counsel Mueller's team asks FBI to probe 'false claims' against him

(Reuters) - Special Counsel Robert Mueller's team has asked the FBI to look into claims that women were offered money to fabricate sexual assault allegations against Mueller, who leads the probe into Russia's attempts to influence the U.S. election in 2016.

"When we learned last week of allegations that women were offered money to make false claims about the Special Counsel, we immediately referred the matter to the FBI for investigation," Peter Carr, a spokesman for Mueller, said on Tuesday.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation declined to comment.

Jack Burkman, a lawyer and Republican operative who has in the past promoted right-wing conspiracies on social media, told Reuters he was speaking to five women who claimed they were sexually assaulted by Mueller, and denied paying them for the information.

He said he would have a news conference close to Washington on Thursday with one of the women who claimed she was sexually assaulted by Mueller in 2010, and that the other four women still needed to be vetted.

Jennifer Taub, a professor at Vermont Law School, said she received an email on October 22 from an individual offering to compensate her if she would discuss her "past encounters" with Mueller, who she says she has never met.

Taub said she found the email, a copy of which was seen by Reuters, to be "creepy" and forwarded it to Mueller's office. The email was sent to her by a person who claimed to be a researcher at Surefire Intelligence, Ltd.

Reuters was unable to connect with anyone at phone numbers listed on Surefire Intelligence's website.

Burkman declined to say if he was working with Surefire.

Mueller is leading the politically sensitive investigation into Russian meddling and possible collusion between Republican Donald Trump's 2016 campaign team and Russian officials.

Burkman has been critical of the Mueller probe and sought to raise funds for Rick Gates and Michael Flynn, two former Trump aides who pleaded guilty to charges brought against them by Mueller's team.

Trump denies any collusion and has repeatedly described Mueller's probe as a partisan "witch hunt."

Russia denies the allegations that it interfered in the election.

Depending which side of the fence you are on, it would seem everything coming from the States is fake or false these days. Anyway, you have a mediocre clown running the show!

This smells a bit like a Roger Stone RF-op as Mueller is definitely on Stoney's trail of collusion with Assange and Gucifer 2.0

Possible conspiracy to obstruct federal criminal investigations.

Expect FBI interviews soon.

One woman was offered $54,000 plus a possible $10,000 bonus for a false affidavit accusing Mueller of sexual inappropriate behaviors. How likely is it that Burkman had the personal financial means for such payments? I wouldn't be surprised if a major Republican political donor is associated with this project.

They do.

Wohl and Burkman are heading for the slammer.

From the voices in your head or from the people who report on what they hear from the voiced in their heads?

Fair enough, though the comment in #2 about Trump was also off topic.

Still, if no one ever went off topic, there would be few posts on any thread, so OK by me.

It's about to get uglier.  Jeff Sessions was just fired and his chief of staff Whitaker was named as acting attorney general passing over Eisenstein.  Whitaker is known for his past criticism about the scope of the Mueller p[robe and now he is in charge of it.

the fun is just getting started.

Rosenstein handed in his, resignation. declas and arrests to follow.

Muellers case is finished. Should have quit long time ago but had to make it to midterms.

???

He Offered his resignation in September 2018. He's still in charge of Mueller's investigation.

However, Whitaker is now expected to oversee the Mueller probe, so long as he doesn’t have any conflicts that would force him to recuse himself. He will have the power to let Mueller keep doing what he’s doing — or curtail or shut down the investigation altogether. https://www.vox.com/2018/11/7/17896316/matthew-whitaker-jeff-sessions-trump-mueller

I don't see him just closing it. I think he will tell Mueller to prove that he has something actually related to Russian collusion by the Trump campaign, and if he can't come up with something real in a few months time it will be ended as not achieving its objective. They've had more than enough time to come up with something.

I take it you are writing "tongue in cheek", but I think Rosenstein is the next to be getting the order of the boot.

Whether or not Whitaker recuses himself is totally his personal decision, the DOJ can not force him to do it, even if their ethics lawyers recommend it.  He had discussions with Trump about replacing Rosenstein back in December and I fully expect that Trump asked him directly if he would recuse himself and he most likely said NO!  For the moment, Rosenstein is still in his old job as Deputy Director in charge of ???? and having discussions with Whitaker before he makes a decision on whether to resign.  As Whitaker had previously said, he could cut back Mueller's budget to a minimum and not approve any further subpoenas or indictments and not release Mueller's final report to congress or the public.  I'd be surprised that Mueller and Rosenstein didn't see this coming and have a  bunch of sealed indictments in a judge's hands that only have to be unsealed, which doesn't require Whitaker's approval.

If true, then that is quid-pro-quo and one more thing for Mueller to add to the big pile o' corruption he's looking into vis-a-vis Trump.

Hypothetical:

Trump to Whitaker: "If I hire you as acting AG, will you kneecap this Mueller probe for me?"

Whitaker: "Sure thing, boss."

Trump: "You're hired."

Do you agree or disagree  that is quid-pro-quo and therefore unethical and corrupt?

as a hypothetical ,yes (without specifics only)

but there is more than meets the eye.

If you take the russia accusations as a frame up to cover for,and prevent investigations into what was revealed in wiki leaks, weiners laptop, oig report(crimes against children hrc), fbitxt msgs, media leaks from fbi(politically driven),

dnc sidelining Sanders, false Fisa application etc etc etc

with a "lawfare" coup  to remove duly elected president with "evidence" paid for by opposition parties(dnc, hrc) with foreign assistance(five eyes)

as a hypothetical (because they never thought she would lose)

would you call that treason? or sedition? coup?

I dont think meuller will be fired by whitaker. no need to.

but he could declas what RR would not.

Trump turn to go on offensive now midterms are over.

and both sides are playing for keeps imo
