The nine year relationship between the Phuket Lifeguard Service and the Phuket provincial and Thesaban administrators is over.

The contract for providing professional lifesavers at Patong beach, the final beach under their watchful eye,  finished yesterday.

Speaking to the MD of the Phuket Lifeguard Service Company, Vitanya Chuayuan, today The Thaiger noted a tone of resignation in her voice after the long battle the company had to provide skilled and professional lifeguards along Phuket’s beaches.

Another reason for tourists to give Phuket a wide berth. Apparently tourists lives don't matter!

Shhhh your not to mention that.

That just shows how low the Phuket administration can go. They don't care about anything or anyone. Will never got to Phuket again. Nothing there that can't be found better in other places.

The budgets just kept dropping each year and, although we tried to improve our efficiencies whilst improving the quality of our lifeguards, we just couldn’t match the lower tenders for the contracts anymore.”

Translation : More funds were skimmed off the top leaving less to actually pay for the contracts.

The budgets for this are pathetic yet corruption still manages to come into play. I'd guess that the Phuket Lifeguard  Service is "straight" and this does not comply with the demands of the Tessabaans.

It's sad to see how much money is wasted in other areas and we can only guess how much goes into the pockets of corrupt officials, when something as important as this is just treated as an inconvenience.

Sadly it'll take a few more drowning Chinese and serious threats from the Chinese Government if the lifeguard service is ever to be taken seriously.

"giving the money to the Thesabans, and letting them control the provision of services, would be a better solution.”

it would be for those controlling the Thesabans, new cars all round.

This is an utter disgrace.  Millions can be spent on statues, signs and other projects worthy of a heavy skim, but on something to protect Phuket's most valuable asset, there's no budget.

Pathetic and a total disgrace... now you've lost a lot of face Phuket admin!!!

Thailands priorities are are perfectly distorted...and they wonder why the Chinese are leaving...a 4th world country
