KHON KAEN, 2 November 2018 (NNT) - Propagated, unlicensed medicine under “Ya Mor Thahan” banner could probably be lethal, according to Khon Kaen Provincial Office of Public Health.

Authorities are warning people about the dangers of the propagated medicine, often dubbed “magical cures for various diseases”, from gouts to paralysis and inflammed joints.

Khon Kaen Provincial Office of Public Health Chief Somchaichote Piyawatwela said such medicine's qualities have been exaggerated and included steroids and controlled medicines that needed to be prescribed by doctors.

Prolonged misuses of steroids are harmful to health and, in some cases, could probably be lethal.

He made his comments following an alarming report about a patient who recently went to Si Chomphu Hospital in Khon Kaen’s Si Chomphu district in a terrible state. She had a swollen face and a bump on her neck after taking Ya Mor Thahan medicine daily for more than a year.

Each set of the unlicensed Ya Mor Thahan costs 20 baht and contains smuggled pills and steroids. Some even include sleeping pills and Piroxicam, an anti-inflammatory drug often used to treat arthritis.

Such pills have been smuggled into Thailand, sold under Ya Mor Thahan banner and been mostly widespread in border provinces.
