The National Anti-Corruption Commission has launched a fresh investigation into rice deals committed under the government of former prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra which were suspected to be plagued with corruption.

NACC chairman Pol Gen Watcharaphol Prasarnratchakit said Monday that two subcommittees responsible for the investigation have found out there were more people suspected to be involved in the widespread corruption concerning the huge amount of rice bought under the rice pledging scheme.

He said that those implicated in the fresh probe were of different group from those already prosecuted and convicted by the Supreme Court’s Criminal Division for Holders of Political Offices.

"Among those convicted are former commerce minister Boonsong Teriyapirom who was sentenced to 42 years in prison, former deputy commerce minister Poom Saraphol, 36 years, former foreign trade department chief Manas Soiploy, 40 years and his deputy, Tikuumporn Natvaratat, 32 years."

If they are examples of sentences handed down for corruption, what should be the sentence for illegally overthrowing a democratically elected Government ?

100 years plus, cut in half for pleading guilty !

Death

Yes, time to get to the bottom of this scandal, delay the Feb 24 election, heaven forbid, they wouldn't want any dishonest characters to slip under the radar and get elected now, would they!

long running police stations corruption case.

Yes, the one near us was finished recently. Three floors, fifty rooms . . . and five busy-looking officers, all checking to see if their communication equipment is working - all Samsung make, strangely. The new station commander is said to be on the ball, though, so that's encouraging.

Yeeeah... How about wrapping up Watchgate with a conclusion that will leave the public not spitting out their drinks before moving back to the future...?

How about doing both ?

Not to forget Suthep’s long running police stations corruption case. Reported to be 80% finalized couple of years ago.

Great work by the NAC (sarcasm). The selective investigations are outrageous but at least there are no setups or made up charges.

Would it not be nice if they worked faster and without bias.

A decade of construction and finally 1 out of the 396 began to take shape. Meanwhile the main contractor allegedly abandoned the project and guess who change the term of reference to favour this company. Still the NACC procrastinate like watchgate. I hope the next elected government will bring charges to the NACC for dereliction of duty and malfeasance; charges that the NACC often allegedly used against political enemies on the behest of the junta.

Don't hold your breath.. the next goverment will be as corrupt as this one and the previous one. They wont do anything to make an anti corruption organisation more efficient as it will hurt themselves. Same as with defamation laws.. no goverment ever did anything with it.Why would this be different.

As long as the old parties win nothing will change.. and it it does not look like new parties will win.

I don't have the talent to see the future but going by history, you may have a point. However I rather have a climate whereby there are freedom of the press and in the social media to talk about corruption and the efficiency of the agencies and laws. Ultimately the citizens will arbitrate through the ballot boxes whether the government are doing enough and fairly to combat corruption. Better chance of fighting corruption in democracy than stratocracy.

And the many outstanding serious cases of Thaksin the fugitive and his ilk. The whole lot should be addressed. Not selective one.

Agree Eric. Freedom of the press and free speech are important checks on government and bureaucratic corruption. In the West we see that being eroded as the press becomes owned by media barons who push their own agendas and by laws introduced under the guise of security, anti terrorism etc.

It seems the political class everywhere don't want Joe Public interfering in their activities.
