An Australian man was rescued on Wednesday night after his yacht caught fire off Patong Beach in Phuket.

Police said the yacht has been anchored for a few days near the Coral Beach Bridge in front of the Sea View Patong Hotel and the fire broke out when its owner, Brian Derek, 63, was cooking.

Police were alerted at 9.20pm and firefighters took about half an hour to extinguish the flames.

Derek was rescued by nearby boats.

More debris on the sea floor of the bay to be cleaned up next time round.

Boats really shouldn't be allowed to anchor there long term.
