Melanoma

Featured Replies

I grew up in New Zealand. New Zealand and Australia are notorious for melanoma cases and it is believed this is because the ozone layer has disappeared in this area.

I have a slightly suspicious  oversized freckle that I would like looked at by a dermatologist and possibly biopsied. However I am under the impression that melanoma does not really exist among Thais And wonder if dermatologist here will recognise it if they see it. Does anybody have any experience or suggestions about melanoma in Thailand.

Thanks

Nick

Not only melanoma but all skin cancers are very rare in Thailand and it is true that most Thai doctors lack expertise in recognizing them. A notable exception is Dr. Anna Jaruwan at Bangkok Pattaya Hospital who trained in the US and worker there for many, many years before returning to Thailand. She specializes specifically in skin cancers and is well worth a trip to consult. Besides the lesion you are concerned about she will do a complete skin check.

I had a rather large squamous cell removed at the government hospital in phitsanoluk with decent results and very inexpensive not sure where you live so if this closer it's available. Total cost with follow up visits and a minor surgery to drain an abscess was 10,000thb
