PHUKET, 19th November 2018 (NNT) - Phuket Airport has issued a serious warning to the public that anybody found to have released floating lanterns into the sky near the airport during the Loy Krathong Festival could face a death, life imprisonment or a fine of up to 800,000 baht penalty.

The Phuket Director, Thani Chuangchoo, said such action is deemed very dangerous to the safety of aircrafts and is in violation of the Act on Certain Offenses against Air Navigation B.E. 2521.

He said such offenders are guilty of violating Section 231 of the Criminal Code and that alone carries a sentence of 6 months to 7 years in prison and a fine of up to 1,000 to 14,000 baht.

Moreover, under Article 18 of the Aviation Act, the offenders could face death, life or 5 to 20 years imprisonment or a fine of between 600,000 baht to 800,000 baht penalty if the violations threaten aviation safety or cause serious damage to aircrafts.

Phuket Airport has implored members of the public to refrain from releasing floating lanterns, balloons and drones into the sky near the airport area.

Then, assuming the above will be ignored:

They know how to get their message across - just the same as people know how to ignore it and float their lanterns at the airport.

As with most laws in Thailand, probably no one gives a s#!$ about that.

Be prepared for flight delays and cancellations.

Let a lantern off get a minimum of 5 years, possible death penalty. Crash a bus and kill 18 people while driving high on drugs 4 years?

Um... not quite.

let off a lantern near the airport ( Buddha alone knows what that means distance wise) and face a 6 month to 7 year sentence, with a 1000 baht to 14000 baht fine scope

the higher penalty, esp death, would kick in if the perp causes serious damage to an aircraft.... as in, perhaps, causing it to crash, killing everyone on board..... which seems appropriate to me.

that said, in the case of other penalties... yes, these could do with updating, or at least enforcing
