Thai citizens of Chinese ancestry ensure that I know they have a Chinese background (grandparents) not Thai. Is there any reason for this? Are people of Chinese ancestry viewed differently in Thailand than people with a pure Thai background?

The Chinese ancestry thing is a double-edged sword, most of the hill tribes were originally from China but were driven out by the Samurai before drifting from country to country and then settling on the Thai borders. So when somebody says they have Chinese ancestry I am certain they are doing so to impress although they may well be saying they are hill tribe.http://www.itdpinternational.org/village-life/from-far-to-near-how-6-hill-tribes-made-it-to-the-mountains-of-thailand/

In the longer history of the region, borders, passports and nationality are a recent event, the gene pool existed across the whole region long before people carried passports. As recently as the late 1800s Thailand and China shared a border. There are people alive today that were born in Siam not Thailand.

Its not like you needed a visa to move between Siam and china back then.

I found the history interesting, the Thai people were originally from a northern part of China.

Best to read but a rough outline is when inhabited by them in and around the Chiang Rai area they began in Siam next to the village where I live Muang Kao which was the established as the first Buddhist state.

Thai people pronounce Siam in two syllables  see- umm as I hear it. ????

Those chinese/thai rule bangkok, they own almost all the businesses.

And in whole Thailand rich people get a better treatment than poor ones...that's why you better show it if you are farang and dress properly (read expensive) so you also get the better treatment.

Strange seeing how the Thais came from China I guess they own a quite a lot of businesses or you talking about nowaday Chinese who have invested in Thailand.

I know a few Thais who have Chinese ancestry, but they never make a huge deal out of it.  Sort of like in the USA when an American guy says he has Irish ancestry.  Regardless of ancestry, they are all Thais which is always plainly understood....again, just like the Irish American guy.

ALL the larger companies in bkk are from chinese-thai..i'm not talking about small shops or marketstands.

The chinese are also building a new chinatown in BKK...

That is not limited to Bangkok, it is everywhere, including the most remote small cities.

You can recognize them during chinese new year, they celebrate it more/longer than the thai do and put all kind of offerings outside.

Not at all the same as the Irish.

And they make a deal about it, not in the sense that they are bragging about it, but they maintain a clear separation between their community and the rest...as they do everywhere, except that it is more visible in San Francisco than in Bangkok.

They basically own the country and Thai/Thais are essentially their reservoir of workers.

This is openly admitted by Thai/Thais intellectuals (university teachers, journalists)...I remember reading a column about it in the newspaper with no name, and I was surprised to see it ending with something like "...until then, the Thai people will keep on working for their Thai/Chinese masters...".

Plus there is the red color and the trinket paraphernalia in the back of the store/business, often with a big belly Buddha in the middle

Pure Thai [whatever that is].

Too difficult to pin point such a percentile.

Required to brush up on one's "Thai" knowledge - culture, history, etc...

Pedantry might apply.

There are also loads of chinese expats in BKK now, they are not thai but here to work in the hi-tech business. That's all new, less farang expats and more chinese.

Etymologically,  SIAM is of introduced/invented Persian bastardization form and almost exclusively used from romantic outsiders regarding this part of the world.

Thais/Tais knew of the term, yet referred to their country name place as Mueang Thai and Khon Thai over the adopted outsider term, Siamese.

Thais of Chinese descent are what the Jews in the USA are.

And what would that be?

I don't know any wealthy Thai family who are not connected to China somehow. The late King Power boss was also Thai-Chinese.

Obvious facts in this context would undoubtedly be called

anti-Semitism but the likeness is very 'eye-catching' and have

to be extremely unobservant not to notice it.

My BFF here in Thailand is very HiSo. She is of Lao/Chinese ancestry and is very proud that she is Thai. I think its just like Americans of Irish Descent, Americans of German Descent, etc. Its a melting pot.

I learnt from history different, Siam was named after a Mon King during the Greater India period.
