I think this is the best way to make sure everyone knows what the rules are. Most countries do this and in terms of fairness, US citizens should do it in Thailand as Thais have to show W-2 forms and copies of U.S. income tax returns when even renewing retirement visas.
Which is why my Thai son and his wife (with 4 kids) have family van and a small 3 door sedan, so they can take their kids to school and pick them up every day. They live 3 to 5 km from the 3 good bilingual schools involved. Luckily son's wife works from home and son has flexible work hrs.
The (high) target amount of money to get his body back seems to have been calculated very quickly, as well.
I would have thought a grieving family would have other things on their mind than working out t he exact cost, and setting up a GoFund me or whatever.
