If all goes according to plan approximately how much time does the entire process of obtaining a tourist visa to the USA usually take?

If we budgeted approximately 6 weeks in Bangkok would that be enough time?

The BIG timing problem occurs in the month or two prior to the U.S. summer vacation, perhaps May & June, when lots of Thai are applying for a visa.  Then may be difficult to schedule the appointment.

So, the earlier the better, and 6 weeks would normally be more than sufficient.
