BANGKOK — Police on Tuesday were looking for the driver of a bus that ran over and killed an elderly female passenger last night in the capital.

The victim, who was struck by a No. 44 bus at about 7:30pm on Lat Phrao road in Wang Thonglang district, died at the scene following the incident. Police said they charged 22-year-old driver Jatupol Imsook, who quickly fled, with fatal reckless driving.

This is the reason why these buses should stop and remain stopped until everybody is clear of the bus but they never do it. Many of them start moving before people have actually gotten completely off.

If what the bus conductor said is true it is not the bus drivers fault.  Running away is bad though.

The bus was pulling away as the elderly lady was getting off, a common practice here. I have no idea why almost all Thais are in a tearing hurry once they get behind a wheel.

However, you underwent the full training which includes emergency braking on a skidpan driving a double-decker.  Thais get virtually no training except being told to sit there, drive the bus, stop and start as appropriate, run like h*** if you get involved in a collision or hit somebody and if you cannot run tell everybody your brakes failed.  Five minutes max.

Not only that they do not stop on the kerb but rather halfway out in the street and then when exiting you are required to navigate safely to the pavement between speeding motorbikes running up the inside of the bus.

Dont I know it, i hate it when I am behind a bus on my motorbike or car.. they block the whole road when they stop.

In the case of bus drivers, many times it's because the want to get first to the next bus-stop.

How is it not the bus driver his fault, he should have waited for all passengers to safely exit the buss before driving off.

In this case he did just that.

Prajan Prompak, the bus conductor, said the 77-year-old victim was getting off the bus at Soi Lat Phrao 66 when she lost her balance, fell from the sidewalk and under the bus that was pulling out at the same moment.

There are sometimes just as many Thai drivers who drive too slow, and are just as big a danger as those who drive too fast, particularly hogging outside lanes.

Yes.

Of course, he'd have to bring along a dozen of his mates to be truly Thai.

Your point was?

I see. Well Im gratified to know that there are guys here who are confident that they can walk up to any solitary Thai guy and spit in his face and not get their butts kicked. I was getting worried about the West ????

Id like to see it though. I can film it for everyones edification ????

Although I have never had any experience of it, I do understand that it is rare for Thai males to fight one on one, they always seem to require back up.

The 44 is a private psycho operation under concession from BMTA. They drive like nutters, many of them, and work all the hours to maximise income. The drivers are on drugs and drive the bus in a jumpy, jerky manner. The moment they approach a bus stop, you can sense the impatience off them. If they can offload any passengers without coming to a complete stop, they will attempt to do that.

They're the ones who are drunk, don't know how to drive, or both. Easy to spot if the police wanted to look, which they don't.

Pretty common for most commercial bus drivers to make sure it is safe to leave the stop or curb after dropping off passengers....."clear your mirrors". (you can see them walk away!) Obviously this idiot hasn't heard about that safety procedure! Or could care less.
