Supreme Court president promises no delayed justice

 

 

The Supreme Court president has promised that all cases referred to the Supreme Court will be wrapped up and verdicts handed down within a year.

 

In his New Year’s message broadcast on the New Year’s Eve, Supreme Court President Cheep Julamont said he was fully aware the  public expectations in the judiciary and, hence, in the past one year, the court of justice had mobilized all the resources and manpower to perform their duties to meet them.

 

One of the important missions that the court of justice has made progress in accomplishing is addressing the problem of delay in justice procedure, with most of the cases received by the Appeals Court being wrapped up and verdicts issued within six months, said Mr Cheep, adding that all the cases that were sent to the Supreme Court in 2017 were concluded within the same year.

would be a change for the courts to actually do their jobs within a fair time, way too many court cases are postponed for BS reasons of the defendant. Thai courts have been a joke for years, would really be great to actually see them doing the right thing for the country and not themselves, I highly doubt we will see any improvement

True but it would be nice to see all the cases against thaksin finished by end 2019 (and all other similar cases too, regardless of colour etc.).

 

Total resolution of the case involving the house for the judges on the CM mountain are by end 2019 would also be good for their credibility. Don't hold your breath.

Other missions :

• render judgements without political bias
• support the constitution against illegal abolishment and amendments
• support democracy by being an independent check and balance against government abuse of power

Failure in those missions places its progress for more expedient rulings as a trivial (almost irrelevant) accomplishment.

But the Court has achieved a major accomplishment earlier this year:

• verbal attacks against the Constitution Court is a "violation of court powers," enabling it to initiate its own cases.

Once the court sees the offense, they can become the defendant, investigator, and judge. While honest criticism without rude, sarcastic or threatening words is not in violation of the law, but if such words are used, it is punishable by up to one month in jail and a 50,000 baht ($1,600) fine.

No delayed justice??? What about the two innocent Burmese rotting in jail since more than four years. A final verdict was promised for the 24th of September 2018. Now it looks to me, that the court wants to wait until the case is almost forgotten, and then come to a decision. They need to be acquitted, freed by today and reimbursed immediately!

Ain't even got anywhere near the court of first instance yet, let alone Appeal court and Supreme Court. Don't hold your breath!
