Just had stitches, need antibiotics?

Featured Replies

Stupidly cut my skin open. 4 stitches needed.

Was given tetnis shot and antibiotics. Knowing the over prescription of these things i was wondering if i needed them.

Thanks.

It somewhat depends on the type of wound and how clean vs contaminated it was, e.g. cut by what/how? And also where located  and how deep i.e. near a joint, involving a tendon (likely not if just 4 stitches)?

"Prophylactic antibiotics have not been found to have a benefit in the setting of uncomplicated lacerations".
