Looking for some help please, a family member has been arrested for an overstay. We received a call from the British Embassy in London asking if we can pay for his flight back to the UK. The man has no money at all in Thailand therefore its now down to the family to get him home. I know this is his own fault and he knew the consequences! 

 

We have been told that authorities in Thailand will look at flights then give us the option. 

 

Can anyone offer any advice on this matter, many thanks.

Keep in touch with the embassy and follow what they say.

Don't talk to lawyers or anyone who says they can help if they are not from the embassy.

When he gets home safe don't believe the 'for xxxx we can get it cleared for him to return'

We will stick with the embassy and ignore anyone else that tries to contact us. We just weren't sure when they said Thailand will look at flight options, we have already been looking at flights and found some reasonably priced. However god knows what they will sting us for in the end.

It's most likely going to be BA.

You can maybe discuss this with the embassy.

Contrary to the many stories you hear the BE are not that bad especially with people who are honest and sincere.

There are very few airlines that accept deportations, they will all be direct flights to the UK, they will all be late purchase tickets (expensive) immigration will decide which airlines are acceptable (that was what they meant when thay said Thailand). If more than 1 you/he may be able to choose. As mentioned BA is one airline that will take a UK deportee.

Ok thanks, they said they will give us two options then we can decide which flight.

When we received the call on Friday from the BE is sounded straight forward, but today they advised its a bit more complicated. We are now waiting on forms to complete.

I'm a bit surprised by positive replies. A family member asks for advice for UK national banged up for overstay and has zero funds. Why can't that family member approach other family/friends to pay overstay and flight. More simple start a gofundme.

I noticed earlier that only certain airlines will take deportations, this is going to be an expensive pay out then! We don't care where in the UK he lands so hopefully they might be able to give us a few options.

As I mentioned it will be a direct flight no transfers permitted so most probably LHR,

I've heard that in the past BE had some sort of agreement with IDC to "fast track" people at a cost in the region of 12K.

 

Find out how long it takes first, if too long or it gets too complicated ask them if they have that option.

 

I have personally witnessed two cases (other nationalities), that ended up in IDC for 3-4 weeks until they were flown out, and not because of monetary reasons, but because of "technicalities".

 

British citizens seem to get out faster, but "fast track", if available, might get them out in 2-3 days.

Great...so no problem. Pay for flight and all sorted. What help were you asking for. The flight most likely will be direct UK. Not cheap. Done

No need at all for you to apologize. That poster was thoroughly out of line.

 

You were quite right to post, and  you have gotten some sound advise here, especially re avoiding lawyers and anyone not from the Embassy.

It was bit obvious. UK embassy won't be paying for flight. You need provided ticket asap to get your family member home. Regardless of cost for direct flught , it is what it is. Added to all that, personally I wouldn't be wasting time on Thaivisa (as much as I respect and use it) , personally I would be dealing direct NOW with Thai authorities to ask "quickest get out of jail card"

what other airline is an option apart from BA? the obvious as basically UK's national airline.

 

will the Thai's upp the costs, by making you(r) family fund an extra seat for a chaperone to make sure you go back home country?

 

and it'd be pretty rough if at the time the move is made, that the relative doesn't cop a full plane, and has to fund a Business class seat!  - a 'standby' scenario of the worst kind...

We haven't been told which airlines, however someone stated further up on this thread that it might only be BA for an option because he is a deportee. This is a question for us to ask BE. We will check the link once we have been told.

I spent several years dealing with the IDC a few times a week. There is a travel agent in the IDC who is very good at finding flights.  They need to be particular airlines (as others have noted) but also at particular times of day since the deportees - there are usually more than one in the transport vehicle - will be taken to a couple of other locations enroute to collect paperwork.  Family/friends can buy the tickets themselves, and often do if they are in Thailand, but need to work closely with the IDC to ensure their timeline requirements are met.  As Sheryl notes above, you will want your family member out of the IDC ASAP since they will be housed in very crowded accommodation with terrible sanitation and minimal access to medical care.  Everyone is housed together - visa overstayers and those who have completed prison sentences, sometimes for some extremely serious and violent crimes.  There are also a fair number of mental health cases.  Not a great place to be. 

 

On a positive note, well done for assisting your family member and researching what is best for him.  I wish there were more like you.  There are some very sad cases in the IDC where families do not have the means to pay for a ticket home (often from developing countries), or want nothing to do with their family member.
