I am an American (retiree visa) and plan to go from Khon Kaen to Vientiane by personal vehicle with Thai/USA wife and members of her family. They are all Thai so no problem for short stay; but as the odd ball I need a visa.  Should I get one in KK or are entry station at Nong Kai?

Thanks for any respondents.

Sounds like you don't intend to stay longer than 14 days.

In this case you can easily get a visa on arrival at Nong Khai.

(I omit the details about price/procedure, busy at times)

The Thai persons probably will travel with ID card only?

In this case they need some three (?) day pass.

Also obtainable before the Thai checkpoint.

I guess they know that anyway.

Personal vehicle?

Do you intend to pass the border with the car or park on Thai side?

Just asking: sounds like you live here on a one year extension?

You have taken care to get a re-entry permit from Thai immigration?

(this effort is what keeps me from spontaneously do a trip to VTE)

I sort of live here, although I split time between here and Texas, and yes --thanks for the reminder, I got the reentry permit yesterday.

Also, owner of the auto is getting a vehicle clearance from Lao KK Consulate.

I appreciate toe info.
