Report Court of Appeals Denies Cassandra Ong's Petition in Trafficking Case
Picture courtesy of PhilStar The Court of Appeals (CA) has rejected a petition from Cassandra Ong, an incorporator of Whirlwind Corp., concerning her indictment on qualified human trafficking charges. In a decision issued on June 25, 2025, the CA dismissed Ong’s bid to overturn the indictment by the National Prosecution Service (NPS). Ong's petition, filed on May 13, 2025, lacked a prior motion for reconsideration or appeal, as stipulated by the Department of Justice (DOJ) procedural rules. Ong justified bypassing these remedies by citing public statements from Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla and due process violations she claimed occurred during the DOJ-NPS proceedings. The appellate court highlighted that Ong received the DOJ resolution on May 2, 2025, although reports of her indictment emerged as early as April 28. Official statements from Prosecutor General Benedicto Malcontento and Justice Secretary Remulla confirmed the case's development, with "more than probable cause" found against Ong. The CA ruled Ong’s certiorari petition was premature, as she had not exhausted the available remedies of reconsideration or appeal, both required under DOJ preliminary investigation rules. The court emphasised that certiorari is applicable only after all administrative remedies have been pursued. By May 15, 2025, the Angeles City Regional Trial Court Branch 118 issued arrest warrants for Ong, former human rights lawyer Harry Roque, and 48 others. They are implicated in human trafficking activities associated with Lucky South 99, a Philippine offshore gaming operator (POGO) raided in June 2024. The accused include various insiders linked to Lucky South 99, including incorporators, directors, and employees, as authorities continue to address this high-profile case. Report Couple Apprehended for Alleged Theft of P600,000 from Antipolo Meat Shop
Picture courtesy of Manila Bulletin In a dramatic turn of events, a man and his partner were arrested for allegedly absconding with approximately P600,000 from a meat shop in Antipolo City. The theft unfolded on June 29, when the shop owner began to suspect foul play after the couple, who both worked in the store, disappeared for several hours. Initially, the owner believed they had stepped out for errands. As the day progressed and the pair failed to return, the owner discovered that a substantial amount of store money was missing. Promptly reporting the incident to local authorities, it soon became apparent that the suspects had fled to Negros Oriental, their home province, with the ill-gotten funds. Responding swiftly, the Rizal Police Provincial Office tracked down the couple. By June 30, they had successfully located and apprehended them in Negros Oriental before flying them back to Antipolo City to face justice. Antipolo City Police Officer-in-Charge Lt. Col. Jaime Pederio confirmed that partial recovery of the stolen money had been achieved. During questioning, the suspects expressed desperation, citing difficulties in sustaining a livelihood in Manila, which they claimed drove them to take the drastic action. They expressed remorse and inquired if the charges could be dropped, although this seems unlikely given the severity of the offense. Currently detained at the Antipolo Police Station, the couple faces charges of theft. The incident has underscored the importance of vigilance and trust in employer-employee relationships, highlighting the broader challenges faced by individuals trying to navigate economic hardships. Authorities reiterate their commitment to ensuring justice is served, emphasising the necessity of legal proceedings to address such breaches of trust and maintain community confidence in local businesses. This case serves as a poignant reminder of the dire consequences of crime, despite personal circumstances or motivations. Adapted by ASEAN Now from Manila Bulletin 2025-07-02 -
