Oil Changes Impossible?

Recommended Posts

TL;DR I need to buy this: HF163. It's an oil filter. Where can I buy one?

I took the trouble to cross-reference the filter I need to a made-in-Thailand brand.

I've been everywhere. I can't find a soul willing to sell a filter or do an oil change.

I managed to find a shop that had a suitable oil (Liqui Moly 4T 15w-50 Street), but when I showed him the oil filter he ceased acknowledging that I exist.

I've been trying to get this done for about a month... Bike is waayyy overdue for an oil change.

Tires are showing dry rot, too. Need to get those replace as well, but the oil change is more urgent.

Any help?

I dunno if the foreign made part numbers help, but I've got a whole list of equivalent part numbers from every maker under the Sun. It's a very common filter. If you buy one, there's a roughly 50% chance it'll fit on whatever vehicle you have.

(I don't want a Fram, but) Fram PH3614

Napa Gold 1348

Purolator L10241

Mobil 1 M1-102

Bosch 3330

Any of these would work, and they're just the more common. I have a very long list...

Is there such thing as an auto parts store where you can just walk in and buy one? When I derp onto google maps I get no love. Par for the course in Thailand...

Worst case, I'll bring a few over next time I do the airplane. But, that's kinda a dumb. There's no way this doesn't exist in Thailand. That's like saying there's no sand in Thailand... Sand is everywhere.

Appreciate your web-foo, sir.

Looks like it ships from Japan for the price of a plane ticket to go there. ????

Made in Thailand, shipped to Japan, price marked up 500%, ship back to Thailand for even more, Farang name on address, 300% Import tax back into Thailand on item that originated in Thailand... It'll be a 200 EUR oil filter by the time I get it.

I'll keep it in my back pocket and keep looking, like that Lazada listing...

Perhaps you can tell us what bike ????

2016 F800R, but I absolutely DO NOT want the "official" oil filter... Looking it up that way won't get what I want.

There's a shop on the north side of town that specializes in motor oils, oil filters and such.  I go there to buy oil and filters for my DIY oil change on my truck (he has the best prices in town), the owner speaks English very well so it might be worth a look.

On Shukhumvit head north past Nakula,  go past the big police station and then look for the PTT gas station, the very next shop house just after the PTT station is the place. Good luck.

I'm calling this the best option so far. Will be checking it out tomorrow.

These landmarks are on the West side of Sukhumvit? As in; on my left as I head North?

Cardinal directions are best directions. ????

Thanks guys!

There's also Bosch service center in Esso petrol station Naklua, on Sukhumvit north of North Pattaya, looks like they do service and oil changes etc but they stock Bosch parts at wholesale price too, I've bought things like injectors from them

Yep, that's the place exactly. Good luck.

Guess I'll be giving this a shot.

Bummer. He had a lot of stock that I couldn't cross-reference. He might have had what I needed, but no way to identify it.

I'm bummed because this guy is the most helpful human being I've met in Thailand so far. I've been unable to give him my money so far, but will definitely check with him first for anything I need from now on.

I'm reluctant to order off of AliExpress because I'm moving to a new condo in a few weeks. Not sure how long it'll take, and don't want to to go to the old address after I'm moved... Guess I jsut won't be going places for a while...

Whatever you do, Don't go to yellow themed service centre at bigC south. Poor Guess work mechanics.

After what I've seen, I have no intention of letting anyone touch it but me.

But, this is my standing policy on anything I own; I'm an adult, I take care of my stuff. Worrying about the sporadic/tenuous competence of the human race possibly ruining my stuff is not on my to-do list. Why introduce more possibilities of screwing up perfectly good stuff?

And why you absolutely don't want the filter provided by the manufacturer of the bike?

Would that make it too easy?

TL;DR

Pleb: "You think you know better than the people who made it?"

Me: "The people who made it have no say in the recommended maintenance, the bean-counters and lawyers do. I know what the engineers know, but aren't allowed to say if they want to keep their jobs."

Long version:

1) Known to be defective.

2) Especially with the oil I want to use.

BMW has a long record of making "manufacturer recommendations" based on what they can get a branding deal with, instead of appropriate engineering. Most companies do this...

They like selling new stuff. If the last one you bought doesn't break, how will they sell you another? Light bulb conspiracy. It's not hard to do the research and find out for yourself. They don't want it to blow up right away, but they don't want it to last too long...

There's no such thing as durable goods anymore... Or is there?

A full synthetic race oil is vastly superior to what BMW craps into the sump if you take it to them. Thus, a more appropriate filter is needed to go with it.

There are no standards for "synthetic blend" or "semi-synthetic." It cold be cheap dino oil, with a single drop of synthetic, poof, it's a blend! Charge twice as much!

I prefer Royal Purple, but I cant get that here... Trying some Liqui Moly 4T 15w-50.

Currently, it's got dino crap from BMW in it, where the last owner took it. Shifts hard. Neutral pretty much impossible. Symptoms I've observed on many bikes before. Put some decent syth in there it'll be a whole different bike. Wind up more consistently. Shift smooth and easy. Lower friction. Much less wear and noise from the top end... Oh, and it'll last 5 times longer.

Given it's BMW, there's also a cost element. Which boils down to this:

"Why do I want to pay a 400% premium to have my bike destroyed?"

Cost isn't really my concern. Science is. It just so happens that science is actually cheaper in this case...

...however, in Thailand, it's a complete pain in the butt.

Yes maybe that's why its "better"  to go with  Honda,Yamaha,Kawasaki,Suzuki in Thailand and not some "overpriced exotica"   4,000 baht for an oil filter !!!! come on !!!  you could get a complete engine rebuild for a "lesser bike"  for that money.

On the Webike link listed above it says:

This price included import tax and oversea shipping fee

Price: ฿649

(tax included)

Where does the 500% mark up or the 300% import tax come from? 649 baht seems like a decent price.

In case someone else needs this... Would like to edit the OP and put it there, but not allowed...

https://www.taradfilter.com/สินค้า/กรองเครื่องมอเตอร์ไซค์/fr-164/

It's not what I want, but it's a direct replacement for the BMW part number. Has a handy 17mm wrench access on the top.

Hit them up on their line ID well after normal work hours. Helpful and quick response. Sent out COD, next day courier for 70 baht extra (free shipping if spending 2000+ baht).

They sell some interesting oil options, too, but I've already got some. Will research and try a few if their offerings next time.

I'll slap this on there until I can get something better.

They're not all bad.  Went there for a basic service and asked them to check my aircon which wasn't blowing too cold. The did the service ok and told me I would have to pay around 15000 to replace most of the aircon system.  Told them no thanks and left but they had obviously given it a good clean as it now works fine.   Attempted ripoff failed big time!
