The elderly owner of a resort in Buri Ram’s Nang Rong district was found crushed by a sliding iron gate at the rear of the property on Monday morning, and later died from her injuries in hospital.

Wanna Wassumongkolpoj, 62, was found lying under the heavy gate by local villagers who happened to be passing by, police said.

The villagers alerted a local rescue foundation to rush her to Nang Rong Hospital, but she was unable to be saved.

No one knew how long she had been under the iron gate.

Her sister, Pranee Kongpolparn, 63, said the gate had not been opened for months, since the rainy season when the area had been flooded.

The gate’s slide rail was slipping out of place, which might have caused it to fall down, she added.

Pranee said Wanna stayed alone at the resort and had had no guests since the floods.

This appears to be a far from rare occurrence, I've seen a few reports of a similar nature over the past year or two.

Just last week neighbor managed to dislodge theirs. Seems he managed to flee from getting pinned down, I heard an almighty racket and some proper cursing.

Anything here is a potential death trap, I'm thinking of buying a mig welder and fixing our own gate that the somchai who originally installed it managed to leave so it's possible to slide it off the rollers. Hopeless.

Speaking of death by gate in Thailand...

BANGKOK — On a sunny December afternoon, British-Thai lecturer and photographer Leo Gauvain was crossing a small street in Bangkok after finishing a meal at a nearby food stall. It would be the last moment of his life.

As he reached the western side of Soi Sukhumvit 22 – at a construction site opposite a five-star hotel – a huge metal gate fell and killed him on the spot, along with a Cambodian worker who was installing it.

More than a year later, Leo’s family said they have yet to receive justice. A negligence charge on building owners and contractors has gone nowhere. A separate criminal lawsuit filed by the family only had its first hearing Friday. The presiding judge proposed a settlement, but the session was adjourned two hours later without any agreement.

I suppose some folks have to "resort" to a short time hotel...

To original story: incompetent low quality construction followed by zero maintenance... blame the brakes?

Poor construction, by unqualified persons; along with poor maintenance and no consequence for injury or death. A common scenario.

The problem being even criminal law isn't enforced in Thailand therefore any building standards there are, are not adhered to. As another poster on this thread mentioned there are no repercussions for those who kill people through ignorance, negligence and incompetence

Most sliding gates I have seen, and I have seen more than a few have a mid span roller to support the gate while it is open.

Rollers can be bought at a metal gate supply shop. I've done that as well.

No ''mirrors on the ceilings ,pink champagne on ice''....The name ''Resort '' is very misleading to us westerners, these are rooms rented by the day or longer, and commonly used for ''short time'' , usually attached ,made of that cheap cinder block with 1 window...150bt/day

They don't look that heavy when they are upright.  There have been a spate of gate crushing incidents.  Spanning 3 meters with one of these things isn't the cleverest idea in the world if you understand basic physics -- which most don't including the contractor who installed it.
