My apologies for committing the crime of the century. I shall never do it again and I feel I should of been fined the maximum penalty, served my 6 months in prison then blacklisted for eternity.

I'm still wondering how much of a stretch inside you need for starting a sentence with 'So' as another poster pointed out.

Yep, ok, its the Ops hard luck. But have you never done this?

Is the fine not extremely extortionate and out of proportion with penalties for other things?

The BiB asked for 5000baht... Heck, they commonly get paid off similar amounts by guys who are so drunk they can hardly walk when they are driving. I’m not saying any of this is right - the law is the law...

......in this case to quote Dickens [Olive Twist’s Mr Bumble] ‘the law is an ass’..

Each to their own but as a pretty heavy drinker over the years I have to say I have never felt the urge to slurp beer in a car or taxi.

True in my early years , drinking in the coach on a beano yes , but for a taxi ride , why not just wait and drink comfortably when you reach the hotel/restaurant/bar.

In a country with such an appalling road safety record , much of the mayhem caused by drunkeness , it seems to me to be an eminently sensible law. No sense in just prohibiting the driver as every Somchai in the land would plead innocence , " its my pals beer officer...honestly ! ".

Do agree though that there is a scam farang element , but sadly that is endemic across the board, corruption is at the root of so many of Thailands problems.

In short Japan is a fully functioning modern, civilised, socialist country whose citizens self regulate....

it seems that you know nothing about these animals judiciary system.

They can keep someone in jail without even officially charging him and without evidences.

99% trials in Japan end in jail term because 99% accused confessed even if they did not do anything. Just read about Carlos Ghosn jailed since 3 months there.

Japan is far beyond any democracy and the people there should be ashamed to accept all the $$hit from their government, Fukushima lies and many others. Japanese seem nice but they actually just are plain stupid.

I just never liked the taste of alcohol, so I just don't see the attraction. I only drink to get drunk not for the taste. I know its rare for people not to like alcohol (taste) but that is just how it is for me. Its not a choice or anything though I am happy I don't need alcohol as it helps the fight against the fat belly.

The times I do drink, i drink too much. It is a rare thing though a few times a year if that. Now if they made weed legal.. that would be something ???? although that probably would kill my diet ????

Exactly ! But some wine with some good food is the only "good" alcohol...

Just thinking about my two mates who got nabbed and fined 2000B each on Sukhumvit for littering. Maybe that was a rip off as well.

The littering ( dropped fag butt ) is a well established scam . 2000 baht is the official fine but one can get away with 500 baht.

As the drinking in a vehicle fine is much higher I would venture that 2,000 was reasonable in the circumstances.

Sounds like I dodged a bullet then. Pardon the pun as they all had a gun on them as well. Weird thing is my mate that I was with said let’s just go police station then when he said 5000 baht and looked like he wasn’t going to budge on price and I said to cop 2k or that’s it and he quickly took it and put it under his book so maybe the cop didn’t wanna go station either. Was probably just happy to make the easiest 2k of his life. The fine and punishment like a few guys said above no where near matches the crime when u consider u can beat someone up and pay 500baht. Sometimes this country makes no sense.

Wow... what a complete and utter shakedown....

The amount of times I’ve done this completely unaware of the risks...  I do it almost on a weekly basis when the wife is driving out to a restaurant.

I never knew there was such an extreme penalty for something so harmless, its completely out of balance with penalties for other ‘crimes’ such as the Taxi driver driving drunks or ripping off his passenger.

IMO this Cop knew what he was doing and looking for a foreigner to extort... (yes, I know extort is the wrong word because there is a law against carrying beer in a vehicle, but it would seem apparent that this Cop has found a ‘niche’ money maker and is exploiting it to its full potential - industrious fellow that he is)....

Open liquor in vehicle laws exist all over the western world where did you live prior?  Problem here is selected enforcement or lack thereof.

I was on the airport bus from Pattaya, well Jomtein, recently when the guy sitting beside me opened up a can of beer and started drinking it, I was going to put a stop to it, but stopped because the guys wife and young child (about 3 years old) were sitting opposite, and I didn't want to upset them.

A number of years back some guy beside me drank about six beer on a bus to Pattaya.  He rightfully only discovered there was a toilet after the bus had arrived.  Many people here are alcoholics with bad drinking problems.

It just should not apply to a taxi, I get why they apply it to cars. I see no safety aspect of it that makes it wrong. Just strange to drink in a taxi, just desperate.

I mean drink at home, drink at a bar but a taxi.. that really sounds like dependance on alcohol. But safety wise nothing wrong with it and a stupid law (for taxi's)

If I was a taxi driver, I would object to any passengers drinking beer as I hate the smell of it.

Indeed Imagine if you did that in Australia or the UK...  nothing would happen because its not illegal...

It is illegal to drink alcohol on public transport or in taxis in NSW and Victoria, with fines of up to $1100 per-person applying. As in many states of Australia

If after drinking at a restaurant or hours at a bar and you still feel  the need to drink a beer on 30 min ride home then your dependant and probably an alcoholic. If taking a taxi home after leaving a restaurant, movie theater ect  and if the taxi is airconditioned I don't feel the need to drink water, a Coke or juice as I am not thirsty . If you need to drink a beer on a ride  home in taxi then it's not because your thirsty as you have just come from bar but because your alcohol dependant.

Well, he was not going home after drinking in a bar. He was going to a restaurant from home.

Jeez, what sort of people drink beer in a taxi <deleted>!

Me! ????

Thais...people on holiday...people on the way home from work...those who've had a stressful day...those who've had a wonderful day.

Back in the 90's and even 00's could freely drink in taxis, on buses, walking down the street, from bar to bar! No problem, no trouble, no fights. May have been illegal back then, but nobody cared. Then all tourist trap newbs started infiltrating...irresponsible, drunk, jealous, rowdy, stupid (this is not aimed at you)...ruined it all for everyone.

Next silly thing we'll hear is...Jeez, what sort of people drink beer between 2-5 pm <deleted>!  :post-4641-1156693976:

Illegal now to drink in cars? Oh no, what are the thousands of chronic alcoholic falangs going to do now while they're in a taxi being driven to the pub? Spending the whole 30-minute taxi ride without a beer? Impossible!!!

Its ok, there are options...

I used to live in a Condo complex which did not allow drinking at the pool (which was a nice resort style free form pool - perfect for a lazy late Saturday afternoon).

But it would have been much nicer being able to enjoy and icy cold one... Problem solved... Cooler Bag and Gin & Tonic in my Sons Juice Cup.....  I think that may border on dependancy a bit more than a beer in a taxi...

But again... the use of emotionally charged jargon with ‘Chronic alcoholic farangs’ takes your comment out of balance and highlights an extreme negative bias rendering your comment no better than the mutterings of someone unable to grasp reality... we discussing a beer in a Taxi which is a long way from Chronic Alcholics...

Yeah I agree. Some people are little uptight. Coming back from S'pore once, I arrived at Swampy at rush hour and knew it was gonna take an hour to get back to my flat so grabbed a cold one before getting in the taxi outside. It made for a slightly less boring and frustrating journey. Beer works wonders for impatience.

In Tokyo you see office workers buying a can of beer from a vending machine after work and walking down the street with it. What's the big deal?

It exists in the USA... Where else? I know there is no such law in the UK, it only exists in some states in Australia....

I think the fine goes to the driver and on his license in the US if i remember correctly. So surprised the taxi driver did not get fined. The passenger might get fined too. Not sure.

Does any one know if the driver or passenger would be cited if a front seat passenger wasn't buckled up?

The problem with banning alcohol at a swimming pool and such is that some people can handle their alcohol and don't become total idiots. There are however quite a few people who can't handle it and then mess it up for everyone.

I really dislike that they then ban it for everyone, seems to happen everywhere.. a few people are irresponsible and instead of punishing them they ban things for everyone. Its of course easier to ban stuff then to really enforce laws and punish those who cause trouble.

I hate it when good have to suffer because of the bad.

You could say some people still drive better after 4 big Changs than many sober 75 year olds. But you can't make the law like that I guess. ????
