Drivers license expired need some info

Featured Replies

South Africans please help! My South African drivers licence has expired and I need to get an international drivers licence to drive a motorcycle in Chiang Mai. Does anyone know how to renew my SA license from abroad (and how long it will take) ? Can I do it through a family member in SA?

Thank you

Maybe worth having a look at this web site (https://www.insurancechat.co.za/2012-01/communication-to-holders-of-south-african-driving-licences-abroad-all-you-need-to-know/)

It's from 2012 so don't know if the renewal application in person rules have changed or not.

Looking at some other more recent web sites, the DL renewal can only be done in South Africa, refer https://www.westerncape.gov.za/service/driving-licences-

"South Africans who are overseas at the time that their driving licences expire can only renew their licences when they return to the country. At present, there are no penalties for late renewal"

Depends on how long you’re going to stay here you could drive without knowing your SA license is expired and not worry about an international license and likely pay a nominal fine if pulled over. Better if you’re long staying is just go to DLT and get a Thai license as it not too hard.

No DL = no Insurance

Rental bike or self owned or owned by another

Saw that on the video today. Section on Land Traffic Act.
