Rescued baby elephant relocated for treatment

Officials moved a young elephant rescued from a cesspool pit in a Bueng Kan village to a forest protection base to receive treatment for an infected wound.
 

On Monday morning, Phu Wua Wildlife Sanctuary officials moved the calf from an open pen at the edge of the forest in Ban Somphon village in Tambon Kokkwang in Bung Kla district to the Kokkwang Forest protection base in the same tambon. The base is about 20 kilometres away.

The officials noticed that the calf appeared tired and that a wound had become infected. The make-shift pen in which it was living was regarded as unhygienic as it was wet and home to swarms of worm flies.

The calf was transported on a truck under the supervision of eight officials.

The floor of its new pen at the forest protection base is covered with straw and canvas. Officials are taking to watch over the calf around the clock.

The calf is believed to be eight to 12 months old and weighs about 80 kilograms. It was rescued from an unused cesspool pit on Saturday.

Thaweep Khamphaengnua, chief of the Phu Wua Wildlife Sanctuary, said he would report the incident to the National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation Department, which would them dispatch a veterinarian specialised in caring for elephants to take care of the calf.

Thaweep said the calf need to recover before discussions could be held on how to reintegrate it with its herd.
