Phuket province set up a working panel to follow the legal issues.

Why? Is Phuket not a part of Thailand now?

Why do they need a working panel - surely the issue is for central Government NOT Phuket provincial authorities.

Hello

It might be not exactly the same but I remember Radio Caroline  was doing his radio program from a boat located in international waters, out of GB waters in the years 60..

I imagine if something could have been done, then surely the GB government would have done..

Maybe another case as it was on a boat and not on a fixed structure..

I do imagine, this guy has taken advice before doing this and obviously is seeking advertising and fame

Have a nice day and happy Easter to everybody

It seems that people will rush to the defense of every loonie and crackpot who comes up against Thai law.  Try building a structure 12 miles off the coast of your own country, yet alone a foreign one, declare it an independent state, and see what happens.

Several people have tried this off the UK coast and run into similar arguments against their legality. I am curious to know why no action was taken until the structure was complete - unless they had a genie construct it overnight it must  have taken several months to build.

Just one question... What was he thinking? establishing a domicile outside the territorial waters of Thailand? over the past 100 years, this country went out ot wars for much less than that, and as long he plan to reach "his home" from Thai territory, he will have problems...

On one level, his project could, and probably should be written off as the antics of an eccentric. On the other hand, with China building actual islands in disputed waters in the South China Sea, maybe the reaction of the gov is not nearly as comic and paranoid as it might at first seem.

A response from the Thai authorities driven by paranoia, xenophobia and as usual employing their chief weapon oppression.

Reading through the Ocean.Builders web site it all looks a bit fishy. Selling 'seasteads' through an 'Initial Seastead Offering' planned for 15 April, money up front, lots of update posts by 'Elwar' including:

"Our current plan is focused on seasteads in international waters in Thailand so that we can mass produce for a single location to keep prices down and have a seasteading community in one place to grow ... Thailand has many benefits for early seasteads including low prices, perfect sea conditions (low waves, no hurricanes/typhoons) and a country that thrives on tourism while leaving most businesses alone".

And payment in anything other than bitcoin would be "difficult" ...

"And of course we will be accepting bitcoin. Anything else will be more difficult."

Unfortunately, you can run but you cannot hide.  Running seems to be useless today as well.  Good luck to this gentleman, he needs it.

As soon as he files his TM30 he is done.

This is Thailand, a real country, not Disneyland.  Imagine if a tourist from Ghana comes to your country, and with a local paid girlfriend do the same in your own homecountry? The utter disrespect.

And now running and hiding???

All the posters who are living in Thailand and as usual are slamming Thailand with their cynical comments about Thai authorities, plz if you dont like it here, why are you here?time to go back perhaps.

Hey, wake up. it comes under a number of international laws and conventions.

So called Pirate radio stations come to mind, Ha! Seriously though, I read this morning that apparently the couple don't own the floating structure but the owner/sponsor isn't mentioned. Also apparently, the Thai police have allegedly been 'harassing' the Thai wife's mother and son who live on the mainland.

There are so many illegal properties built on and around Phuket it is not funny and the only time a designated Parks Minister wanted to highlight this..he was promptly sacked some 4 years ago having been in the job weeks!

But they weren’t built more than 12nm outside the coast, setting up a fund raiser in Bitcoin for more of them and postulating some libertarian b.s. about governments and laws.

Seems to be a bit of a contradiction on exactly what they were doing there

according to a Company called Ocean builders who seemingly own the site

the people on there were living rent free

but some articles claim he was involved in investing his Bitcoin ?

If only Prayuth had his fleet of submarines. They could have blown this insideous threat to the country's sovereignty out of the water before it even got started. You can't treat these kind of things lightly, or before you know it, every Tom, Dick, and Somchai will start building there own territories in the middle of the ocean somewhere.

Why not build your own territory in middle of the ocean the chinese have done it turning deserlete islands that dont belong to them into their own territory and military home in the south china sea , the islands are owned by vietnam also philippines say they are theirs among several countries

He never had the intention of "declaring it an independent state".

Yeah, but this guy is dumb, taking on the 'state' whether he is right or wrong is just plain stupid. Should have just said sorry and moved on.

everyone seems to be forgetting he would have to enter as a tourist everytime he comes to shore, it is outside international borders so he is no longer in Thailand when staying on it, visa or not. Whether or not any of what is happening in regard to the building is legal doesnt matter if he is still coming into Thailands waters or ports he needs a visa to do so, if he doesnt have one/get one then he is entering illegally. The building is a whole other question, when you read the articles on it the builders are saying it is to alienate the thai govt so they cannot supposedly do anything to you a\nd calling the pm a dictator, seems they are getting very political with it which is probably what is pi** them off but it still comes back to the legality of him entering Thailand everytime he wants to, he cant have it both ways, if he has no visa and been black banned he cannot enter  at all, and if he did have a visa he would need multiple re entries as well, the immigration bit is a big problem for them, hiding out in Thailand is just a bad idea as it will put him in jail when caught

Nerd with a bit of money......

Should have called it a fishing platform...now the Thai dream is over.

I always thought cruising the 7 seas on your own boat is the real freedom, not having a shitty platform.
