PM not satisfied with Songkran road accidents toll

 

 

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha is unhappy with the number of fatal road accidents during the Songkran holiday, even though there were fewer casualties compared to previous years.

 

The prime minister said today that he was not satisfied with the road accident situation, albeit an improvement over last year. He said those who were killed and injured are all regarded as part of the country’s manpower.

 

He pleaded with motorists and motorcyclists to obey the law as a normal practice, such as refraining from drinking alcohol before or while driving and wearing crash helmets on motorcycles at all times.

Like asking the blind to look out, or the deaf to listen up. Driving laws are either not known, misunderstood or simply ignore, which of course starts out here in the country by half the riders of motorbikes being too young and having no license despite their parents letting them use the bike (without helmets).

Start with getting the police to enforce the laws all year round, not just at songkran. Enforce the existing laws rigorously for all and the death toll will drop.

given that there are less accidents resulting in death per day during songkran (59 per day in 2018) as opposed to the daily average during the rest of the year (66 on an average) logic suggests that to reduce road accident death toll songkran should be extended to 365 days a year.

Just back from Vietnam. EVERY bike rider wore a helmet. (A tribute to their police force?)  EVERY rider sounded their horn EVERY five seconds. (The latter practice could get you killed here.)

 

There are always fewer deaths during Songkran as the roads are choked with traffic.  Wait till some space opens up so the speed level can increase, then you'll see the figures climb.

Now I know this is false news: 'He' [Prayut] and 'pleaded' in the same sentence.

I'm sure the only time he has 'pleaded', instead of 'told' or 'demanded', is in the lyrics of his sickly songs he pens.

Indeed...these people might have had use as valuable army conscripts where they could have served the country by shining Mr general's shoes or washing Mrs general's underwear.

Although most Thais have no common sense of safe driving and traffic laws, this is a good thing to not drink and drive and to wear helmets. But this statement coming from him and his self imposed government who rewrite the laws and constitution to their liking is a bit off. Not to mention...……..

Noisy motorcyclists need to be fined when it affects your concentration playing with your phone while sitting around instead of checking motorists.

I lived in Vietnam, when they started enforcing wearing helmets. Took only a few days to have everyone wearing one.

 

Police officers on every intersection with a stick, hitting people heads as they drove by and giving fines to the ones they could catch. That is all it really takes.

 

Of course in Thailand this would require the officers to wake up and step out of the police box, to actually do some work.

I have said before that there are only  250,000 coppers for a population of about 65 million people. And Thailand is a very BIG country......so therefore Police Force is very small to enforce any laws...
