Yes, I was sat on a lovely beach there nearly on my own, enjoying Langostinos freshly cooked. A far cry now.

I only saw minor flooding when I was there, and I suspected it wasn't rain water, it was sewage. 

 

Lucky I wasn't trapped in a flood like in your photos.

 

I frequently had to shower with the bucket and scoop because of water shut offs, and had some sleepless nights in a hot bedroom without even a fan, due to power blackouts.  Both of these were normal for Sihanoukville in the past, but now they are longer, much longer, and a lot more frequent.

people who have been to Sihanoukville before might remember the old Golden Lion Plaza/Pub Street (where shipwrecked/Stevie C's bars etc were) those people might remember the road how it used to look up until around 2016/17, this is what it is like now....

 

and people wonder why SHV is flooding all the time now... look at how much chinese development has gone on the past 3 years...

Most all wars prior to this one they dropped bombs on countries that were invaded.....The bombs exploded outwards..For the Chinese invasion of Cambodia/Sihanoukville the bombs they now drop explode upwards in the form of new buildings....

I have never seen any place change so fast....

You get what you pay for.  And on the big picture it is not that much cheaper if at all.

definitely mate, Cambodia was fun when it was cheap, but it aint no more, after 6-7 years there i ended up moving back to Thailand and finding a place in Naklua,

in Pattaya my rents cheaper, bills cheaper, eating out is cheaper, when renting a motorbike was cheaper, fitness gyms cheaper, boxing training is cheaper

But all that isn't of any importance, beer is cheaper in Cambodia, and that is all that counts for most on this forum.

So your a Cambodian refugee lol.......I bet your not the only one...I read though some of that Cambodian web site....Boy things look like they are headed down hill fast there.....It looks like to me most/all? the farang business and guesthouses in Sihanoukville are pretty much gone...

 

The Cambodians just cant seem to catch a break...HUGE Chinese money is flowing into Cambodia but most of that money is flowing back into Chinese businesses....While causing housing and businesses rents to skyrocket at the same time....To add insult to injury the minimum wage is under 200 dollars a month...Sure the land owners are making bank but every one else???

 

And to top it all off with some of those new $$$ prices that were listed I am not sure how the bars expect to be attracting punters.....Thats like 200-300% inflation from a few years ago...

i viewed a hotel room on victory hill near the beach in snooky. there were bloody cotton swabs on the bed sheets and on the floor. the last roomie was shooting up meth in there. meth addiction is very common down there and is epidemic. lots of drug addicts around.

 

youll see them around. older foreign dudes staying in very cheap monthly rooms that look like they wont last long. sad and you need to watch yourself. its a last stop for many after a long hard road.

I really doubt there are many down and out end of the road farangs in Cambodia any more unless they are hanging out in some of the smaller Cambodian citys...

and yeah you are right, a lot of the local businesses have suffered no end, the only ones who have benefited are the ones who sold their land or rented it to the chinese, other than that, theyre <deleted>!

I never saw it myself but I read plenty of reports about  Cambodia having quite the collection of older farang junkies...But that has been a few years ago now....So it WAS true at one point..If the scene is still there its moved to some backwater city now.....

It's basically everything Thailand was in the good old days. 

9 years travelling Asia, Danang ticked the boxes for me. It ain't St Tropez, not a whorehouse, but as stated, clean safe cheap, . Vietnam is the new kid on the block.

The topic is Pattaya v Sihanoukville, and there have been many posts and photos showing have quickly Sihanoukville has changed, and not for the better.

 

Although a little off topic, I would like to say, the new kid on the block, as you describe Vietnam, is also changing quickly, but they are building it bigger and better in Vietnam, which also includes infrastructure, to support there rapidly increasing tourism industry.

 

The growth in sihanoukville Cambodia should not be compared to the growth in Danang Vietnam.
