‘Big Joke’ granted leave for US trip

Former Immigration Bureau chief Pol Lt-General Surachate Hakparn is on leave until the end of April, his new boss said on Thursday.

Surachate, also known by his nickname "Big Joke”, requested the leave for his trip to the United States and would come back to work at the Prime Minister's Office next month, said Patcharaporn Intreyonk, permanent secretary of the Prime Minister's Office.

Patcharaporn said she gave permission for him to take the leave as Surachate is eligible to it as a civil servant.

She said he would have to report for work with her at the end of his leave. When asked about assignments to be given to Surachate, his new supervisor said the agency's executives would meet to determine suitable work based on his skills and abilities.

Once a rising star in the police, Surachate was on April 9 moved out of the Royal Thai Police to the Prime Minister's Office at the order of Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha. The order appointed Surachate as a special adviser at the Prime Minister's Office, a position considered inactive.

No reason was given for Surachate's transfer, first out of the Immigration Bureau and then out of the police altogether. Speculation pointed to alleged irregularities involving personnel transfers of senior police officers.

Surachate attained his lieutenant-general's rank when he was only in his mid-40s. He had the opportunity to serve some top police commanders in the past. And he is close to Deputy Prime Minister General Prawit Wongsuwan, who oversees the police.

If he wants to come hang with me we could do a road trip up to the dispensaries in Boston, maybe stop in Atlantic City and drop a few $$, we would have a good time, getting buzzed, going to Waffle House and Taco Bell, taking pics of old bridges and such like....

It'd be especially ironic if he wound up on a forum somewhere, saying he's locked in a detention room and asking for advice on what to do next.

Use an agent ,  preferably FBI.

Sometimes, some people inherit wealth. It's just in the family.

Exactly so. Though it's not sometimes: it's always.

I have never heard of a Thai civil servant, policeman, politician or soldier who despite a paltry monthly salary was unable to explain outlandish wealth that initially seemed inexplicable.

And yes "inheriting" is the usual very convincing reason provided. I wish those pesky foreigners weren't so cynical.

As he's a foreign official under investigation by his own government, he should be denied entry to the U.S. on grounds of being a threat to national security.

I totally agree. If he is under investigation for any criminal activities he should be denied entry to the U.S. Maybe someone should drop a dime on him. I am now happily living in the U.S. after residing in Thailand for 15 years. I am taking care of some financial matters now and going to come in to a large financial windfall. Guess what, I am not going to spend ONE CENT IN THAILAND.

No no no. Thailand needs foreigners as they don't know how to run their country. If no foreigners Thailand will be bankrupt.

Before his ignominious departure he was apparently preparing signs to go up at airport immigration saying "Do you feel lucky, punk?"

Big Joke travels on a red diplomatic passport so his entry to usa is unhindered.

Special advisers to the PM's office all have them

Aww, you're spoiling the fun.

These people think he went and waited in the visa queue with his forms all filed in and the fee in his hand. They think he's paying for his hotel and transport and food too.

They are incapable of thinking that an advisor in the Thai PM's office will be a VIP in America.

This is because they have no breadth of imagination, mostly because they have been told how to think all their lives.
