How many long stay expats, on proper visas or multiple SETvs, METVs, etc whatever, actually have proper medical insurance either back in their home country and are hoping they won't need much in Thailand, or have policies that are good in Thailand?  Cost of living is wildly variable and one can exist on fairly little if one is going Fan and non AC, 30baht noodle soup outside the 7 11 every day, basic thai meals at food courts, etc.  Can all be done, but at what risk?  What level of comfort?

LOL. My TH apartment is modern, has A/C, large rooms, loads of natural light plus a sunny outdoor area. Oh, and it has no mold.

No air con required in Sydney??? Are you serious?! Evenings can be cold, so (expensive) heating is necessary. Australia's electricity costs are among the highest in the world. Many AU residents in the southern states cannot afford to warm their homes.

Cost of THAI food in THAI restaurants/bars/pub was used in my eating-out comparisons, not meals in pretend or otherwise IRISH pubs.

Gold Coast?? Read my post again. SYDNEY is used in the comparison not the GC. Good luck finding "blonde haired blue eyed bombshells" in certain south-western suburbs of SYDNEY.

Health Insurance for me when travelling overseas (to Thailand) costs nothing. It's provided FREE by my AU credit card provider as Travel Insurance when I take my annual 350 day "holiday" in Thailand.

They are even better looking in Sydney. Super models walking down george st. Sydney is BIG where did you live, western suburbs where the "ladies" were pumping out 6 kids for the $1200 centrelink payment?

Getting off-topic bro....so my final off-topic post is: You mean “better looking” in YOUR opinion.

Yesterday we walked from Sydney Star Casino to Darling Harbour to Central train station. Never saw one hot “Aussie” girl. But did see MANY hot Asians.

I have very nice western food every day for less than 30bht/meal.

Learn to cook, ingredients are cheap.

Actually today's dinner will cost me 40bht, I'm planning on a big roast pork steak with a baked potato, mushrooms and gravy, but I'll offset that expensive meal by eating a cheap breakfast, either home made yogurt and honey, or maybe porridge and honey, that only costs around 5bht.

i cant see how you do that unless your meals are very small. a small broccoli will cost you more than 30 baht.

Respect is not in the Thai dictionary, Thais take you for granted. I on many occasions have said to my Thai G.F. where does my money come from. I am on a UK State Pension with a small Private Pension. She always says yes but your salary was better. I can’t disagree but so is the cost of living, wasting my breath to be honest.

Nope I worked long hours and managed too accumulate savings o nearly 50 years of my working life.Thais from my experience don’t ever try and save, spend it as they get it.

Well, despite all the bluster to the contrary, many Thais I have encountered have very low self esteem. It is hard to respect another, if you do not respect yourself. Something inherent within the culture? Perhaps the nature of a tribal based culture, where there is little sense of self? Perhaps the feeble educational system which forbids one to question their elders, and drums all of the creativity out of one's soul? Perhaps the decades of allowing an incompetent and greedy army to rule the nation, without putting up a fight? Who knows. I suppose this is a discussion for another forum, at another time.

I don't eat broccoli so it doesn't matter what it costs.

But I do eat pork steaks 80bht for two in Tesco Lotus and Tesco Onion gravy @42bht/tub.

Potatoes @30bht/Kg, mushrooms  @20bht/bag, and Bell Peppers @10bht/4 from my local Sunday market.

I think I might make a weeks supply of chicken soup (I just need some tomatoes @20bht/bag)

The main cost of that will be the chicken breasts, 38bht/400gm from Tesco Lotus, lasts 8 meals.

Goes well with my home made bread @16bht/750gm loaf.

What a load of nonsense  you write without any references,

"Most items are actually cheaper in the UK now (clothes, food, technology etc etc) and better quality."

Well here is a reference;

https://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/compare_countries_result.jsp?country1=Thailand&country2=United+Kingdom

As for better quality please provide supporting evidence considering the limited amount of good that the UK produce themselves directly.

Clothes I always buy when I return to the USA as a reference the “Super dry” shirts and shorts I bought in the USA were half the price of the same items in the Superdry store in Terminal 21 bkk. Electronics I buy when I travel to Singapore. I can get the vat tax refund when leaving Singapore because I go there as a tourist. I can’t do that here because I live here on a retirement extension.

If one takes an average of what people spend from the above table then multiply it by the number of respondents the following staggering figures pop up.

I live with the inlaws so there's no rent.  I pay only for electricity that I use in the two rooms I spend most of my time in (bedroom & office).  I don't drink or smoke and almost never go out, so I selected 16-20K.  I do have occasional bursts of discretionary spending like buying new computers or shop equipment but that's infrequent.  If I lived alone and had to pay my own rent, it would be closer to 30K.

Why you don't commit a crime in a country with nice prisons. i.e. Sweden, Norway, Switzerland ? It would come out to the same. AND it is free. You could even earn some money.

depends, one of the few dishes i ever make myself is spagetti gorgonzola bacon sauce, the ingredients alone is closer to 1000 baht, and  since i like it i just keep on eating until nothing left to eat, even if i have to work on it the whole night
