From what I recall, Farage was pointing out the fact that Norway and Switzerland etc. managed to negotiate their own deals, and so in theory the UK (much larger economy etc.) should be able to negotiate something better. I agree with that theory.  What nobody could predict was us getting the weakest PM/negotiator in history in Theresa May, and the EU taking full advantage of that. 

 

Farage did suggest during the referendum campaign that a no-deal exit would be better than continued EU membership, and as a potentially preferable outcome if negotiations with the EU produced an unsatisfactory deal. This is well documented.
