This article brings back happy memories of a family trip to the Cameron Highlands way back in 1964. My dad was based in Singapore (Changi RAF base) and a car trip to CH was arranged in his black Humber Hawk. Quite a journey in those days, with a mechanical problem or two on the way, but well worth it.

Wending our way up the narrow road to near the top was quite an experience. Particularly with the local Orang Aslis being well in evidence and causing my mum to warn dad to keep his eyes on the road ahead!!

The climate change from the humidity of the plains was a treat and the old style buildings were very picturesque. The Boh tea plantations were well worth a visit and strawberries were heavily featured for dessert.

Always meant to visit again when I was working in Malaysia during the 90's but never made it. With all the changes, probably best to keep as a memory.

Interesting. Could you post some data on the cost of transport, accommodation and meals please?

I first visited the Cameron Highlands 60 years ago when families of service officers in Singapore were given leave at rest stations in the Cameron's and Fraser's Hill. It was colonial and very much like an Indian hill station (most of the servants were Indian origin Malays)

I visit now by m/bike every year after the Sepang MotoGP. The road up is great on a bike and despite the gross commercialisation of the area there are still many interesting things to do.

Tanah Rata is still nice but Brinchang is ugly and spoilt by hectares of ugly plastic greenhouses.

Warning: Check the public holidays and avoid weekends. On public holidays and high days the whole place becomes a traffic jam with hordes of Malay weekenders come to pick strawberries and get some cool air. Hotel prices rocket and the place becomes truly unbearable.

Yes, very inexpensive could mean anything, why be shy on the prices.

Very inexpensive to me is $10-$15, which is the price I'm happy pay for day trips in Vietnam.

I visited Cameron Highlands several times when I lived and worked in Malaysia in the 60s. It was then very quiet and beautiful. The Smokehouse (very fake Tudor) served a good afternoon tea with strawberries and cream, and the jungle trails were easy to follow, with masses of butterflies. Never found Jim Thompson though.
