Thanathorn

The pro-democracy camp was robbed of election victory due to unfair rules and Thais should be aware that the election is “just one step in a journey to democracy”, Future Forward Party leader Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit said on Thursday.

Thanathorn apologised for the party's failure to stop military’s power. “Today, we didn’t lose in this election, but our victory was robbed (due to the unfair rules),” he said.

He admitted that he had a little hope that the Democrat and Bhumjaithai parties have made the right decision. However, he said that the anti-junta allies did as they pledged and did not give up even though the rules were unfair.

“This election is just one step in a journey to democracy. We believe that our day will come eventually. Dictatorship cannot resist the wind of change and democracy. Thais will cry for justice. This election also shows that in order to block democracy, the NCPO has to spend a lot of money,” Thanathorn said.

“As hope is still with us Thais, please don’t lose it. We as politicians are going to move forward and campaign creativity in politics,” he said.

He thanked Thais and the anti-junta coalition for supporting him. Thanathorn was nominated as prime minister against PM General Prayut Chan-o-cha on Wednesday and gained 244 votes from anti-junta blocs. Prayut got 500 votes from the Lower House and his handpicked senators.

“It’s not the end, but a new beginning,” Thanathorn said.

“The result of the premier election shows that democrats and politicians have to work harder in order to prevent the next generation from an unfair and limited society,” he added.

Thanathorn, whose MP duty was suspended due to controversial case over media shares holding, said that as an opposition in parliament, the Future Forward Party's MPs will check the performance of the government, raise issues of people’ problems, push useful and advance laws, prepare for local elections and strengthen the party.

And why not let him try and encourage him to try?

IMHO the current coalition will quickly crumble, there's already mention that some coalition members will not receive the ministries they were promised. Do you think they will just say never mind? I doubt that.

Also in the media that some dems now having second thoughts about joining the junta party.

All good reasons for FF to be very active to speak up and educate the people as to what specifically is wrong and how to change it, etc.

And to say 'let us get together, vote and change the senate bullshit law and then have free and fair elections"!! Until they repeal that they have no real chance.

One can only hope. Prayuth and the entire army, are the last thing in the world this nation needs right now. He is incompetent beyond the furthest reaches of one's imagination, he is moving the nation backwards and is the polar opposite of progress.

What Thanathorn and the other true democrats must now do at all costs is ensure that they NEVER enter into another (second) 'election' which is presided over and managed by Prayut and his gang. The next 'election' will be far more rigged, manipulated and mendacious than this one. There is no way on God's fair earth that the junta will not have learnt from their recent experience. Never again will they botch and bungle things so appallingly that their rigging and lies only bring them barely across the finishing post of 'victory'. Next time the swindle will be massive and the margin of 'win' huge. There will be no need for coalitions. It will be junta, junta, junta, all the way.

So: Thanathorn - learn in goodly time that you (and other true democrats) will be making the situation much worse if you enter another 'election' organised and controlled by the junta powers. That way lies only further, greater futility and despair.

You must find and stimulate some other (of course peaceful) way forward ...

Yes have to agree that the next election will be a harder to zero chance of getting a fair shake more than this unfair one. They really need to keep concentrating to bring down the MP’s as they are doing now for having shares in the media and then have the government voided. But still hard to do when one like Prayuth and friends seem to still have an immunity card as no one wants to cross them.

You never know, but the signs are pointing to this coalition not being at the helm awfully long, I give them three months. And good, as this coalition is not in any meaningful way doing justice to the actual election results.

And it is good to remember that this coalition was only possilbe thanks to 11 micro parties, none of which actually had enough votes to claim a seat, but they were all awarded a single seat regardless, and on the same day, all 11 indicated they would join the anti democracy coalition. Now that's no coincidence, this was simply planned this way.

This and some other examples, quite clearly indicates the pro democracy coalition had no fighting chance, even though they came awfully close. As to the democrats joining this coalition, shame on them, utter deception of the people that still bothered to vote for them.

I think the democrats will eventually be the downfall of this coaltion, time will tell. But I suspect the constitution changes the democrats want, will fall on deaf ears.

As an aside, good to see Thanatorn can call a spade a spade, I was banned for 7 days saying the exact same thing !

Sir, I have a good deal of respect for you, but you must realise you are urinating in the wind...

But I still admire him for accepting what is at present and looking towards the future and keeping the Thai peoples hopes alive.

Fair point. Sometimes frustration gets the better of me.

It gets to all of us at sometime.
