Video: Pregnant woman dies after horrific pick-up smash on Koh Samui

Horrific CCTV footage from Koh Samui showed the moment a woman on a motorcycle was facing impending doom. 

 

Patraporn, 28, was about to cross the road on her motorcycle and was looking behind herself carefully when a pick-up driven by a delivery driver lost control. 

 

She tried to get away but had no chance as the Isuzu slammed into her. She was two months pregnant.

 

Thaivisa notes that close examination of the footage revealed another person on a motorcycle waiting to make a turn on the other side of the road was also hit though she seemed uninjured. This was not mentioned in the Sanook story.

 

The pick-up was being driven by 22 year old Phiphop. He told police that out of shot another motorcycle had cut in front of him causing him to swerve and lose control of his vehicle. 

 

The accident happened in the Mae Nam area of Koh Samui.

Samui continues to be the most dangerous place to drive, on this planet. The death toll is at least twice what it is nationwide here. I had a friend who worked for Samui rescue for 7 years. The stories I heard were unbelievable. And he said all of the official numbers were fake. The death toll was far, far higher than what was reported. Anyone driving a motorbike on Samui must do so with the utmost care, and do not even consider driving a motorbike there, unless you have alot of experience and skill. Even then, it is the luck of the draw. If the grim reaper is ready for you, Samui is a grand spot for him to take you.

While tragic this accident might have been avoided if drivers actually followed the laws of Thailand and used some common sense. I thought red and white markings on the curb indicate that parking is not permitted at any time. Throw that in with an illegal lane change by the motorcyclist and a speeding truck is simply an accident waiting to happen.

You must have been parked up in a Tesco Lotus car park, looking at the elderly/disabled/with children designated parking spaces 2o minutes before opening time if that is your all time highest score. ????????

Out on the highways surprised that the all time high is more than one minute.

This incident was no surprise for the poor lady , she could see this pr ick of a driver coming towards her at high speed , excuses , very seldom ' my fault ' .

OMG what speed was that pickup doing I lived in Maenam for a number of years the traffic can be crazy and the drivers hurtle along as if it’s a racing track ????????RIP???????? To the lady and her unborn child ☹️

RIP The Lady, nobody deserves to die in such a way.   The truck driver is a dangerous fool as so many of them are but sadly she should not have been parked where she was and there was plenty of room in the turning next to the shop to park her bike and walk 10 m.  She was not wearing a helmet either but i doubt that would have saved her life in this situation.    Life is cheap and very fragile in the Land of Looney Drivers.

Hmm,..I remember some 20 years ago a reporter from a English language local newspaper told me there was one dead on the roads every day on Samui, but he was not allowed to write it !!! it must be a whole lot more now !!!

I agree...I alone never last more than a few minutes and then probably because it is so early when I went out.  The idiots on the road far out  number the other drivers many of which have too little experience driving a motor vehicle according to safe standards and traffic laws!

'Accident' implies the root cause (I know I know) of an event such as this was unforseeable. In this case that is utter nonsense, the driver of the pickup, driving too fast, lost control, colliding with a pregant woman and killing her.

My first reaction to the video, was "where the hell did he come from?"  On the freaking sidewalk!!!  At speed!

I passed that scene just after the ambulance carrying the poor woman flew past me in the other direction. That stretch of road is long, straight and bloody dangerous for reasons already explained. I use that road on average twice a day and can expect to see up to three ambulances on blues and twos during each short (20 min) hop.

 

I have dashcams front and rear but no longer bother uploading the footage.

 

Edit: There's a school on the same stretch where a policeman on point duty stands in the middle of the road oblivious to his own mortality. At 7am when the sun is rising he is completely invisible but simply sniggered when I wound my window down and prodded the wife to tell him to place a bollard/sign 100m into traffic to alert drivers as to his presence.

 

You can take a horse to water...

The pickup driver stated in mitigation that a bike had cut him up but watching vid.one can see no vehicle in front of pickup for quite some time before impact.

Just another cowardly excuse for a man he should not be spared the wrath of Thai justice.

While driving in Samui in general takes 100 pct concentration and can be a risky affair I find that stretch from Maenam to Nathon as one of the most dangerous ones here. It seems that the better quality of the road surface just invites all the knuckleheads to drive at incredible speeds and to overtake at all cost. 

 

I always hear discussions about what the adequate speed limit should be on this stretch. For me that is a completely irrelevant discussion, as with many other areas in Samui traffic safety will not be improved until they do enforce the current traffic laws.

 

By no means I want a Western type nanny state with a speedtrap behind every corner, but the old bill being out and at least occasionally enforcing the speed limit would at least give people something to think about (and fill the coffers of the police while helping to achieve the constantly discussed reduction of traffic fatalities). I don't see much impact of the many traffic safety initiatives while they seem to use up resources and "management" time. As  almost everywhere else in the world, people only seem to learn the lesson when it hits their wallet.

The pickup enters the screen already on the pavement, so chances are he did swerve to avoid something, out of screen shot...

Doesn't excuse the excessive speed at all though !!

I am retired on Samui. 

 

Recently I did a trip to Phuket which was an eye-opener.  The traffic in Phuket was immeasurably better behaved.  People new where they were going, allowed others to do the same,  The flow was faster and I felt a whole lot safer - more like driving in my old home cities in Australia where accident rates are very low.

 

I came back, drove off the ferry and into a collection of idiots.  The drivers on Samui are unbelievably stupid compared to wehat I experienced on the mainland.

Complete <deleted>, the speed he was going when he killed the girl no one could have cut in front of him, the video shows him swerving to the left side of the road so where was the other motorcycle... not in the outside lane cutting in front of him. motorcycles can't go the fast... Manslaughter !

You are being disingenuous to the young lady.

 

Watch the video carefully. She was looking over her shoulder and she saw the truck hurtling towards her. She was jumping off her motorcycle as she was hit.

The lane that she was in is in fact a motorcycle/bicycle lane. It is not for parking as many people seem to assume! This lane was created many years ago by the powers that be and went all of the way around the island.

The truck was actually in that lane and heading for the pavement. It was not on the road. The driver was way out of control.

Looking at the young lady's actions, she was being very careful about looking both ways - there was nothing wrong with her actions and thanks to the idiot in the truck, this accident was unavoidable by her actions. 'this accident might have been avoided' is a nonsense.

Sad waste of two lives.

The moronic displays of idiocy on Thai roads that results in death or injury just makes me so angry.  We can make these generalisations,. that most Thai drivers are incompetent behind the wheel, complete idiots, don't think past their nose  and just cannot drive.  They either go at a snails pace,  or drive like lunatics, they can't turn corners and their vision seems to be stuck around 20 metres in front of their vehicle.  I count my own Thai family in this generalisation and I refuse to be in a vehicle with any of them and they know why.

Tragic. But this is Kuayland. Where the majorty of people should simply not be allowed to drive.

 

After all when you step inside a car you are effectively at the weheel of a 1 - 2 ton weapon. I wouldn't be comfortable investing that kind of responsibility in the vast majority of young Thai people that's for damn sure. This little f***wit was traveling way too fast (as is so often the case here) and even with his excuses, which are most likely BS, he has killed two innocents.
