Agriculture Ministry’s survey: Farmers earn more income

BANGKOK (NNT) - Last year, Thai farmers earned more income and enjoyed better quality produce, thanks to the government’s marketing drive. This year, the output of rice, para rubber, fruit and corn has substantially increased.

The Permanent Secretary for Agriculture and Cooperatives, Anan Suwannarat, said a survey conducted by the Office of Agricultural Economics found that farming households earned an annual income of 197,373 baht in 2018, up by 22.64% year-on-year. At the same time, their spending increased to 122,890 baht, up by 20.53%. Farmers’ annual per capita income averaged 74,483 baht, up by 26.29%.

When considering the farmers’ sources of income last year, the survey found that many rice, fruit and field crop farmers earned more income. Although their operating costs had increased due to the economic situation, they still earned more income.

The government has placed great importance on strengthening farmers and agricultural institutions by raising their standards, implementing effective marketing planning, using technology and innovation to enhance their competencies, and carrying out the Sustainable Thainess scheme.

The government has also cooperated with the private sector and the civil society to encourage farmers to grow crops that are suitable to their environmental conditions, allocate water resources, and using good seed varieties. With the support from different sides, many farmers have expanded their farms and taken better care of their crops according to water supplies and weather conditions. As a result, the quality and quantity of their produce have increased improved.

Backing into numbers for a year ago for revenue vs expenses, I get a net income of Bt65,027.

Compare that to recent Bt74,483 I get an increase of 14%. Intuitively, if earnings increased 22.64% and spending increased 20.53%, the difference would not increase higher than those two rates.

Still even a 14% increase would seem commendable.

But I notice the increase is the combined per capita for the collective output of rice, para rubber, fruit and corn. There has also been market manipulation (substantial government subsidies and consumption while restricting imports). So the statistics cited defy clear comprehension and trust.

I do not know about the big farms but the local prices for most vegetables are up 200-300% from when we were growing them over the previous 2 years. Good luck to all of the growers but as Gecko says the yields are going to be down if the full wet season does not kick in soon. Happily we have got out of the market.

Average, some ear more and some earn less.

And some farmers might have additional income that is not accounted for in the survey, could be they forgot to tell the tax-man that they also sold something on the local market...????

Yes, everything in the garden is rosy: rice yields are up more than ever witnessed in history before; farmers are wallowing in luxury; farm labourers are driving around in Porsches  - all due to the wise and beneficent management of the economy and  nation by the omniscient, omnipotent and unmatched junta!

And  don't  forget  the Emperors  lovely  new  clothes!

Given the complete lack of fruit on the local trees, I'd predict that Lumyai will be at record prices for growers.  But - not many growers out in our area have any fruit.  A few of the farmers who use irrigation and a whole lot of chemicals will probably make a killing this year.  Everyone else?  Farmer bank will have a heyday making loans.
