Thailand’s prostitution laws out of step with reality

Despite firm denials that prostitution is a ‘thing’ in Thailand and the high-level narrative that prostitution in the Land of Smiles is just an outdated type-cast, the evidence to the contrary remains obvious, in plain sight, any night of the week.

 

A “Review of the prevention and suppression of prostitution laws project” seminar was held at the Thammasat University Tha Prachan campus in June aiming to formalise and zone sex-related activities in Thailand. The report recommends the country’s sex industry be controlled under the authority of the Department of Local Administration.

 

Thai PBS reports that Law lecturer Akawat Laowonsiri says Thailand is obliged to protect the rights of sex workers and is a signatory to  international commitments like the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW).

The fact that so many officials deny it exists here tells you everything you need to know about this place. 

 

Thailand is the world’s largest brothel. There’s no hiding it. Everyone in the world knows it.

In 'The Land of Denial' everything is perfect !

Thailand would not even be on the map with out the illustrious bar scene. They made Thailand a heaven haven .

It is easy. Let them register all bars as brothels. and reserve the job of pimps (bar owners and managers) for Thais only. 

If prostitution was legalized in Thailand, how would the BIB augment their salaries?

If there'd be prostitutes in Thailand, they might have a lot of more visitors. 

 

  To be honest, what does a Thai massage mean to the rest of the world, not being familiar with ALL THE HOOKERS, long distance relationships and all that other crap?? 

 

  And the Happy Endings at a massage, are they just wishful thinking, or did I just dream it?

 

 Thais do not sell child porn at Nana and elsewhere, nor would you find huge dildos, because that's not allowed in this so pure and honest country.  And all is good.

 

   Pinocchio must have some very loose screws.

Well, the pickins are pretty slim here in HH, but there are a few cuties. It helps to increase your alcohol intake.

My Thai was coming along great, now where am I going to get my tones pitch perfect?

You could talk about the hypocrisy of this till the cows come home.

 

The Pattaya, Phuket, Patong, NEP farang targeted hookers are but a drop in the ocean compared to the Thai on Thai prostitution. 

 

Drop into the the smallest of Thai towns and there will be the local karaoke bar, which doubles as the local brothel. 

 

The country is awash with it, always has been. 

 

I don't think it's laws that are out of step with reality, more like the ruling elite is out of step with reality and  their understanding of what their country is actually like!

 

Maybe they need to get out more

They should allow women to legally work as freelancers and pay taxes.

No need for any middle man to gain profits over their work.

 

Working in any establishment will be of their own free will and not due to any legal necessity.

 

As i see it, all other options will eventually lead to unnecessary risks of hardship and potential abuse.

Those two sentences contradict each other...

 

But yeah - either make it completely legal and leave them be, or keep the situation as-is and leave them be. If they actually managed to reduce prostitution they'll be hurting the women and hurting tourism. As much as TAT hates to admit it, prostitution is one of the main reasons many (most?) tourists come to Thailand.

I don't see any contradiction.

 

Tax payment is an action that should serve you back in the form of various services that the country provides for you as security, health, roads ..etc

Ideally, none of this money should go to anyone's private pocket.

It's a very strange dynamic Thai people have with the whole concept of prostitution.

 

The first time I went to Pattaya with my wife and son, who was at the time around 10 I think, I was horrified.

 

We'd just moved from Singapore, where it's about as sanitized as it gets, pretty much confined to the 'four floors of <deleted>' on Orchard Rd.

 

Now my wife is interesting. She grew up as a teenager in the US, then moved to Singapore after college, before we eventually moved to Thailand.

 

She just rolled her eyes at my horror, with the rather astute comment that; these girls have to earn a living to support their families, probably a few kids from deadbeat Dads. What do you want them doing? Chopping sugar corn for ฿200/day? They can make that in 20 mins and they are putting food in the kids mouths.

 

Don't say I agree with it, but there is logic to it
