A man and his daughter were rescued on Wednesday morning after the roof of their house in Bangkok’s Klong San district collapsed on them Tuesday night, trapping them under the rubble.

The Samrae police station was alerted only at 9.30am of the incident on Soi Charoen Nakhon 35 in Bang Lamphu Lang sub-district and sent a team of rescuers to help.

Somphan Samitiwanthikul, 61, and his daughter, Patchon Samitiwanthikul, 31, were rescued shortly afterwards.

The family said the house was about 100 years old and had been passed down from the previous generation.

They said there were heavy rains at 9pm Tuesday night, causing the roof to collapse. Neighbours noticed the damage in the morning and called police for help.

Rubble gives the connotation that bricks and mortar were present.

I see a tin roof held up by ageing timbers or less which couldn't stand up to rain or wind!

Building on a Thai budget.

Unfortunately, that's what poor people have to do, some do not have a choice.

This looks more like a 'shanty' type shack than any structure that's been around for a long time.

I'm sure the media here just repeat whatever they are told without any thought or responsibility - no way this building was 20 years old, let along anything approaching 100 years old, particularly when you consider some of the teak houses are build in the 1950's to 1960's.

I hope the father and couple are ok - those afflicted by poverty here face greater difficulties than many of us can ever imagine.

Back in the early 2000's I remember driving on one of the elevated expressways or whatever they call them and remember vividly the gleaming spires of expensive condos and office buildings and shopping malls, then looking down at the wriggly tin hovels surrounded by all this wealth, it disturbed me then and disturbs me even today.
