Ja New offered police protection – if he gives up activism

After a violent assault by anonymous thugs left him with severe injuries, political activist Sirawith “Ja New” Seritiwat on Sunday sought police protection but was told he would get none unless he gave up his activism.

 

Sirawith has yet to decide whether he will agree to the deal.

 

The anti-junta activist was discharged from hospital on Sunday after having been under medical care since June 28, when he was attacked in Bangkok by four bat-wielding men in broad daylight. This was the second violent assault on Sirawath in the space of a month but police have been unable to identify or catch the attackers in either case.

 

The latest assault left him with serious injuries including a fractured eye socket that has affected his sight and forced him to postpone travelling to India, where he was due to study for a master’s degree. Told he will need at least six months to recover, Sirawith has asked for his scholarship to be postponed until next year.

Keep your mouth shut about your political thoughts, and we'll think about it.

As some wouldn't trust the RTP at the best of times, I think he is wasting his time, as he has already rocked the boat, and got massive publicity following the 2 vicious assaults, which will always go against him.

That is pure wickedness to offer protection but with conditions. He has the right to his activism. 

 

More so, that perpetrators names are already known to authorities. They are harbouring a death squad, possibly larger that those 4 seen on videos.

In all reality, almost every one who commits a crime and runs on motorcycles can be traced through cc tv and motorcycle noise or looks recognition very very fast. I call this is a tremendous travesty of foul!

What right has the police to tell a citizen that he has to give up his beliefs to receive police protection. If the police did their job in the first place this would not have happened, to the police and the insipid person in charge time to forget about the bribes and brown envelopes and get on with what you were paid to do, ENFORCE THE LAW or is that too hard

We've all heard about Section 44 of the Interim Constitution. I had heard about it and read things about it, but never actually read it before. When I did I realized how scary a thing it is. You can google Interim Constitution Thailand and read it. It's only one short paragraph, but gives the head of the NCPO the power to do virtually anything. Peace and Order!

Vulgarity at it's most vulgar!Of course if he stopped his activism why would he need police protection?Not only is this just about the dumbest thing they could say it would have to be just about the stupidest thing they could say!Now the higher ups will have to come to the rescue and say some more dumb and stupid sht to appease the viral community.It's not only a question of where is the support of the Thai people but where is the voice of the global democratic community?Somebody just dropped a pin,I heard it!

Do people not see if he gave up activism there would be no need for police protection. The attendance of the police in a case like this would be for surveillance, to make sure he toed the line.

 

This investigation should come under a 3rd party control as it is blatantly obvious the attackers are being protected.

I wonder if they mentioned the dead bodies found in the Mekong when they told him the conditions, to help him make a decision. If he give up, why would he need protection anyway?

my thoughts exactly, Thailand again showing why it is still firmly a 3rd world country 

 

"To protect and serve"  is normally the primary function of a police force in a civilised country, it would serve us all to remember exactly where we are and what comes with it.

 

The cop that made this statement very obviously has no concept of what policing is - nothing new about that to most on here
