BANGKOK, 20th July 2019 (NNT) Thailand and Australia have set up an ad hoc team to join the drug and transnational crime suppression operation. Australia will provide support for personnel development to enhance the effectiveness of the suppression initiative.

Mr. Weerawat Tengamnuay, Deputy Secretary-General of the Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB); Police Major General Chatree Phaisarnsilp, Deputy Commissioner of the Narcotics Suppression Police; Police Colonel Phaisit Wongmuang, Director-General of the Department of Special Investigation (DSI), the representative of the Anti-Money Laundering Office or AMLO, and Mr. Neil Gaughan, Deputy Commissioner of the Australian Federal Police, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the Thai-Australian Joint Ad Hoc Operation Project to suppress transnational crimes, drug trafficking, money laundering and a timely exchange of information. Australia will support the development of personnel and preparation of intelligence information on transnational crime networks especially those in Asia, and provide equipment for operations to ensure effective law enforcement and suppression.

The international cooperation has led to the arrests of nine suspects in six major cases and the seizure of 1.9 tons of ice, 3.9 tons of ephedrine, 41.7 kilograms of heroin, 3 tons of marijuana and assets valued at more than 7.5 million baht.

probably was prepared for a long time, but is it in the wake of nominating of a convicted thai drug dealer, involved in $1.2 heroin deal, as a thai agricultural minister?

Likely the Australian Feds work alot closer with the FBI /DEA here than with the BIB. There's been a few major busts over the years involving AFP &FBI.

I remember one bust several years ago with the Thai brass dominating the news conference and the farang cops quietly standing in the corner looking a little bemused by the circus.

You couldn't trust anyone here with important Intel.

The biggest bribe I've heard of was 20 million baht paid to a colonel to let an Indian gangster escape even though he was cuffed to a hospital bed with police guard.

Good luck with MOU.
