Bombers sink Crows for Sheedy

By Roger Vaughan

AAP

Sunday, 29th July, 2007 4:45:00 pm

ESSENDON has capped one of the biggest weeks in its history with a 12-point win over Adelaide at Telstra Dome.

Four days after announcing Kevin Sheedy's 27-year coaching tenure will end this year, the Bombers returned to the top eight with the 18.9 (117) to 16.9 (105) win.

The result left Essendon placed eighth with a 9-8 record, while the Crows are now struggling on eight wins and nine losses.

Adelaide is yet to beat the Bombers in Melbourne in 11 attempts.

Matthew Lloyd kicked five goals for the Bombers, while midfielder Jobe Watson and ruckman David Hille had strong games.

Adelaide's on-ball stars Simon Goodwin and Tyson Edwards were outstanding and Ken McGregor kicked four goals.

Essendon and the Crows blew plenty of chances in a frenetic last term, before the Bombers kicked three unanswered goals for a match-winning lead.

The game was played at finals intensity and featured plenty of errors as the two teams were effectively trying to keep their seasons alive.

Essendon broke the game open in the first term, taking a 24-point lead, but Adelaide fought back to trail by only five points at quarter-time.

While Adelaide led by seven points early in the second term, they were unable to maintain their momentum and scores were level at half time.

The Bombers slowly started to gain control in the third term and led by 11 points at the last change, kicking the last two goals of the quarter.

First-gamer Nick Gill worked extremely hard for Adelaide as a key forward, but he will rue two easy misses in front of goal.

Essendon suffered a major blow before the first bounce when Dustin Fletcher (knee) was a late withdrawal and Kepler Bradley took his place in the side.

What an interesting comp. this year. :o

Geelong rampant on top (seems only a run of injuries may prevent a premiership. They've been blessed so far), while up to eleven teams are fighting for the other seven spots. Not one position is decided at this stage.

Kangaroos (2nd) continue to surprise by winning, but don't have a great percentage, while Port and Eagles are seperated by 9/100ths of a percent for third and forth. There's only a couple of games between the rest of the contenders.

The run home crucial for all teams :D

(No coaches sacked yet this week.)

Judd says NO to State of Origin.

http://realfooty.com.au/news/news/you-prob...5647864413.html

As you can see this is the Melbourne Age and it glosses over Judd's injury problems to make it look like he's just being a prick, but it's still an interesting insight into the way that AFL players and clubs feel about State of Origin.

Both South Australian clubs have made it plain they don't want to know about it.

Jeez thanks mate - much appreciated. I can hardly wait to reciprocate your generosity :D

Good win to the bombers and this is following up what I wrote last week. Essendon is still a realistic contender for the last weekend in September. I don't think the Crows can pull themselves out of this. :o

Latest AFL news:

Koutafides retired effective immediately after a bad hip injury.

Luke Darcy announced he will retire at seasons end aged 32.

Sandilands out for the season with injury.

Michael Voss has sent a letter to all coachless clubs announcing he is not available to coach in 2008. (Caretaker coach at Carlton, Brett Ratten, thus becomes favourite to hold the position next year.)

Sheedy very interested in the Melbourne job.

Adelaide f@cked, fans calling for coaches head!

Well your half right, I think the Crow's are finished and Craig's inability to improve younger players must come under the microscope.

Michelangelo Rucci tells it like it is: http://www.news.com.au/adelaidenow/story/0...1-21544,00.html

Port on the other hand have a young side with few injury problems. Some could say it resembles the side that won two minor premierships in '02 and '03 without winning a final, but hard lessons have been learned since then. I think Williams has learned a few as well.

Remember this is the club that every pundit and scribe predicted would not see finals football for at least twenty years after entering the AFL.

We know how to surprise people down the Port.

Late news: A move is afoot to buy out Wallaces' contract at Richmond to make way for Sheeds.

I read in the online Age the other day that he's telling people he fancies going to Melbourne.

Yes, that's what I said in post #280, but the Richmond job was occupied and Wallace has 2 years left on his contract.

This news about buying out that contract surfaced just last night on the footy show. The astounding thing about the plan is that it was apparently instigated by Ron Joseph, the Kangaroos Director!!!

how is that related to Thailand? :D

In the same way we expats are related to Thailand Doctor, we bring our quaint customs and pastimes with us and this forum gives us a little bit of leeway to discuss them.

how is that related to Thailand? :o

how is western food related to Thailand?

how is jokes, puzzles, etc related to Thailand?

how are the myriad of soccer forums related to Thailand?

how are 98% of the threads on TV related to Thailand?

Reality is that the board started up to relay information about Visas in Thailand and has grown since then into becoming an expat forum which is open for all expats to discuss the things to matter to us here in Thailand.

basically if you don't like it or appreciate it, then bugger off back to wherever you came from and leave the rest of us to enjoy ourselves.

Hawks crush Dons finals' hopes

05 August 2007

HAWTHORN crushed Essendon's AFL finals hopes today with a 63-point win at the MCG.

The Hawks kicked six goals to none in the final term to shut out the Bombers in a scrappy game, winning 17.17 (119) to 7.14 (56).

Essendon will struggle to make the finals, given their poor percentage and the fact two of their last four games are at Subiaco.

Hawthorn badly needed a win after losing three of their last four and Lance Franklin responded, kicking four goals.

Hawks key defenders Trent Croad and Campbell Brown were outstanding, restricting Matthew Lloyd and Scott Lucas to a combined three goals.

The Bombers started strongly, but could only manage six behinds in the early rain.

After a bad turnover by Essendon as they tried to clear the ball out of defence, Franklin kicked the first goal of the game at 19 minutes.

Franklin also kicked the second as the Hawks went into quarter-time leading four goals to nil.

Essendon did not kick their first goal until 15 minutes into the second term, when key defender Dustin Fletcher received a generous 50m penalty after a mark and kicked from long range.

The Bombers kicked two more goals to keep themselves in the game at halftime as the Hawks led by 25 points.

Hawthorn increased their lead to 41 points at 19 minutes in the third quarter and the match looked over.

Essendon then kicked four of the next five to reduce the margin to 23 points at three-quarter time, to briefly suggest an unlikely comeback.
