I wish to extract screenshots from old personal movies which were converted from VHS to DVDs

I am not interested in infringing copyrights of commercial movies.

I use Windows Media Player or AsusDVD.This last program has a capture frame option…but doesn’t work.

Any advice would be welcome

Try media player classic (note the "classic"). It has nothing to do with media player, it's a separate program. Very small and free download. I think powerDVD also can capture screens.
