Pro-EU Liberal Democrats win parliamentary seat from UK PM Johnson's Conservatives

LLANELWEDD, Wales (Reuters) - Britain's pro-European Union Liberal Democrats won the parliamentary seat of Brecon and Radnorshire from the governing Conservatives on Friday, a blow to Prime Minister Boris Johnson in his first electoral test since taking office.

 

The vote was triggered when Conservative lawmaker Chris Davies was ousted by a petition of constituents after being convicted of falsifying expenses. Liberal Democrat candidate Jane Dodds won with 13,826 votes.

 

Davies ran again for the Conservatives and came second with 12,401 votes.

Using/interpretation of by-election results to predict national election results is a dodgy game, but it is perhaps noting that Plaid Cymru and the Green Party did not field candidates. If one takes the votes Plaid won at the general election, and assume (quite realistically) that they went to the Lib Dems, there is her majority!

 

What is more, the Brexit Party won some 3000 votes, rather more (6 times or so) than their predecessors UKIP. Again, realistic to assume that those votes came from the Tories.

 

Feed these two points into the the analysis and perhaps a rather different picture emerges...

It was expected for 2 reasons - although I am not surprised that the Boris factor made it a close call.

 

The Tory candidate is a lying cheater and not fit for office, and the Lib Dems pro EU stance guaranteed them victory.

 

A kick up the backside for Johnson.  Maybe he should reassess what's best for Britain instead of playing party politics to gender support for the Tories at the expense of Farage. 

 

Bottom line - the Tory government Brexit will be decimated at the next GE providing Labour kick out Corbyn and stick with a peoples vote on whatever deal it manages to obtain.   Better still, kick out Brexit and the ERG right wing element.

Tick, tick, tick...

Big mistake for the Brexit party to field a candidate, without, the Tories would have romped home by a great majority.

Two big saving graces for the Labour party though. 1. They just beat the Loony Party and 2. They just managed to save their deposit.

Always a pleasure to watch a smug lib/dem giving their victory speech though.

I read this morning that another Tory MP is seriously considering switching to Lib/Dems

Splitting the Leave vote between Tories and the Brexit party will not end well for either of them.

 

Funny how the main policy of the Liberal Democrats is to reverse the outcome of a democratic vote. A name change might be in order.

Habitual liar with a majority of 1 promises to take the UK out of the EU regardless of consequences to the economy and jobs - 'a price worth paying'.

Speculation, dear boy. A result is a result as all leavers would say -it was a democratic victory for a pro EU party.

If you are going to imagine nonsense scenarios, can the rest of us postulate on what Brexiteers would have been posting had this been a win for the Tories or the Brexit Party.

Labour  just 5% of vote   lollollol tick tick tick   TOCK......no hope lib dems GE      Pity Brexit contested it, Boris would have romped home,  but he will be happy enough  was expected

I'm just suggesting that in a general election the result might be rather different.

Right now Labour is not the issue. 

 

At issue is the ability of the PM to maintain control of Parliament, it just got a lot harder for him to do so.
