TV presenter ‘Noom’ comes up short in death compensation payment in ‘Praewa’ case

Acting on behalf of an underage driver's family, TV news presenter and actor Kanchai “Noom” Kamnerdploi (centre) presents the compensation cheques for the deceased and wounded victims to Civil Court chief judge Opas Anantasomboon (right) on Tuesday. Nation/Rachanon Intharaksa

TV news presenter and actor Kanchai “Noom” Kamnerdploi on Tuesday submitted a total of Bt41,755,050.79 to the Civil Court on Ratchadaphisek Road in Bangkok.

He was there on behalf of the family of Orachon “Praewa” Devahastin Na Ayudhya to pay compensations to the families of nine people who were killed, and those who were injured, in a 2010 road accident in Bangkok in which Praewa, then an underage driver, was involved.

The actor, also accompanied by lawyer Decha Kittiwittayanan, insisted that his representing Praewa's family was not an act of choosing sides, but rather he was an aide to ensure the victims’ families received monetary compensation as quickly as possible.

However, the amount was short by Bt880,000 due to a miscalculation, and so Praewa's family said they would submit the additional sum to the court by August 28.

The accurate figure, according to a source at the court, was Bt42,637,810.40, which included the original compensation amount of Bt25,781,137 for the families of the deceased and the injured victims, plus interest at 7.5 per annum amounting to Bt16,650,023.40 (calculated from December 27, 2010 to August 6, 2019) and related fees.

Praewa, then a teenager too young to legally hold a driver’s licence, crashed her borrowed car into the back of a public van operating on the Thammasat University-Victory Monument route on the elevated Din Daeng-Don Muang tollway in Bang Khen district on December 27, 2010. Nine people were killed and six injured.

Some of the survivors complained last month that they had not yet received any compensation from Praewa, even though the Supreme Court on May 8 had ruled in a civil case that she, her parents and the owner of the car she was driving had to pay a combined Bt25 million plus interest to the injured and the next of kin of those killed.

The Justice Ministry had said if the compensation was not paid before the August 28 deadline, the Execution Department would auction off the assets of those convicted to ensure the victims' families received their dues within six months.

Finally families are getting compensation, but isnt it sad that a well known tv presenter is making a big show out of it, very disrespectful to those poor people who  were killed.

  • Would have been better if the family or the girl gave it to those affected personally, to show their regret and remorse for what happened. Not a media opportunity to save face and family name.

9 people killed and family lives destroyed and they reduce it to this circus - disgusting.

Lets hope they miss the deadline and have assets seized to cover the victims loss .

Never thought I'd see this day.

Glad it has finally arrived.

Huge relief for some, I'm sure.

If it's a miscalculation, pay the money right now. There's no need to be waiting anywhere near the 28th of August.

I'm pretty sure that's what the lawyer is for. Did they think by sending a celebrity that the families receiving the money would ignore the 800k+ they're still short on?

Turning a mass killing compensation payout into a media event and still coming up short after 9 years.....disgraceful!

  • Popular Post

Funny how they couldn't find they cash until they were shamed on Facebook a couple of weeks ago.

Now as if by magic, 42 million Baht appears complete with a celebrity to hand it over like someone just won the top prize on "If the Price is Right".

What a family.

Yeah, 9 years is quickly!

They needed an actor to ensure compensation was paid to the people killed by this child(at the time), aided and abetted by her parents.  They should all be in jail for manslaughter and the actor is just that, an actor who was paid to learn a script to say something on the day. Disgusting but typical of the way connected Thais  carry on their everyday business as if killing people has no significant consequences and can be played out similar to a nonsense Thai soap opera.

He is not there to "make a big show out of it". He is simply employed to be there. It was not his decision in the same way an actor playing a "baddie" is not actually a baddie.

I don't fully understand the dynamics at play on this one but I do know it is public pressure and reputational damage control that are driving Praewa's family to finally pay the compensation due. They are not scared of the legal repercussions because people like them are above the law in Thailand. Thus, perhaps, the ostentatious and public presenting of the cheque is related to reputation and portraying the family as good people.

... and then send the driver to jail for ten years. Or better yet, lure her to pluck mushrooms, and they'll slap her with a 15 years sentence.

"Noom" seems to have made a tit of himself!

And...? Is the check going to bounce?

Same exact thing came to my mind. I mean, a check given by an actor to a judge.. After such a marvellous face redemption antic, I wonder if the victims ever even have the opportunity to try to cash it out.

If the family had to do it, they would lose face.

And nothing on earth is more important than saving face.

Obviously they are neither regretful or remorseful.

Very true but you know and most of us know that Thais from this class of people with their backgrounds and influential contacts do not give a sh$t about respect for whom they may kill. The only respect they have is for money.  They have attempted to turn the manslaughter of nine innocent people by their child as an opportunity to persuade others how good they are.   Sick comes to mind and I only hope Karma takes care of this family of trash in the rightfull way IMHO.

They have no human decency to present the money they have to use others to do their dirty work. Add to the insult after 9 years they cant get the amount payable correct. Karma is nor far away............................

How can you possibly cover the loss of a life, not to mention 9 of them? Just disgusting that it is possible to buy your way out of trouble. The only remorse seems to be having to finally pony up the cash. ????

The cheques havent cleared yet!!!

that will teach these HI-SO,s think they are above the law, that has cost them an extra 16 million i love it

Has the fine payment taking into consideration the "commissions"?......We would all be surprised if there were none payable....!
