A bus crew has been killed after a tour bus travelling from Hat Yai to Bangkok for a mathematics competition ran off the road and hit a tree. The driver and 18 student were all injured. The bus ran off the main road in Chumpon, about half-way through the journey north.

Police and foundation rescue workers headed to the scene where they found a young man dead and 19 others, mostly students, trapped in the wreckage. Everyone was pulled out of the partly overturned bus and taken to hospital.

The deceased was identified as 17 year old Prompiriya Semneng, the bus crew.

27 year old bus driver Warodom Chudrung told police in hospital that he was feeling sleepy and was trying find a place to park the bus and rest. He says he suddenly woke up when the bus hit the tree.

The 18 students included 12 girls and 6 boys from the Hat Yai Witthaya 2 School in Songkhla province.

A maths teacher from the Witthaya 2 School told police that they’d rented the two tour buses to take the 72 Mathayom Suksa 1 students to Bangkok. The buses left Hat Yai at sunrise to attend the maths camp at Siam Park City in  Bangkok.

Police say the driver will be remanded in custody and charged with reckless driving causing death.

Hat Yai to Bangkok and only one bus driver? Negligence.

I would have preferred if it really was a “career” instead of “careening” off the road when the idiot bus driver decided he felt sleepy.

How sad for the deceased and family.

School trips are great fun but not when irresponsibility ruins it for so many.

Well at least we now know how to wake up the drivers....

Thailand cannot afford to lose young people with mathematical talent ... a sad ending to a young life, and terrible news for his parents and wider family.

Yet another driver falling asleep, they better make it mandatory they drop

a Yaba tablet before every journey.

If I was to take the bus, mini bus,I would be sitting behind the driver, and

every time he nodded, shout loudly in his ear,I definitely would not be

falling asleep.

That dreadful picture is every parent's worst nightmare made real. How many more horror stories of drivers falling asleep at the wheel will it take to wake the Thai government into taking action to stop the slaughter of the innocents?

What’s going on here.

Hat Yai - Bangkok = 930km.

Hat Yai - Chumpon = 106k

he was only about 1 1/2 hrs into a 10 1/2 hr journey and he falls asleep already.

he obviously was not prepared for that trip, but having said that, for a trip that long, there should be 2 drivers.

it really is time thailand got serious about Long distance road travel, for Buses and trucks.

This must end !!!  This driver needs to be jailed for murder ...

I wonder how much the bus company will be liable for civil damages?

something amiss when the driver is falling asleep after 90 minutes....

where are their standards/criteria and who is monitoring them?

oh wait....

It is time now for a tachograph in every bus, truck, and minibus.

And yes, checking this is just as necessary.

Unfortunately it just adds up to another bus statistic ????RIP

Up a tree was not the best place for a cat nap !

''one and a half hours into the journey ''...... how many hours had he driven before picking up the students ?

His co-driver was sleeping.

Personally, I do not think there was a co-driver. The other crewman was only 17 (too young to drive big buses) and he was the one who was killed. RIP.

sorry mate, try 480 klm  not 106klm, its a 2 hour drive just from Surat thani to Chumporn and a few hours more  from Surat Thani to Hat Yai all due to road conditions, you are way out with your milage/times, he was over half way when he crashed,. I live in Surat Thani, we drive to both at various times, still there should have been a second driver in the bus, even from Surat Thani to Bangkok buses have 2 drivers
