Sontirat unfazed by five parties leaving ruling coalition

Energy Minister Sontirat Sontijirawong played down worries about the government’s stability after five small parties left the ruling coalition and formed their own independent opposition. 

 

He said that political matters could be resolved through talks and exchange of opinions, and there was nothing to worry about. 

 

Recently, Mongkolkit Suksintaranon, leader of the Thai Civilized Party, said that five small parties -- Thai Civilized Party, Palung Thai Ruk Thai Party, New Democrat Party, Thai People’s Justice Party, and Thai Teachers for People Party -- who together have five house seats, had decided to leave the ruling coalition and work as an independent opposition.

 

Their decision leaves the government having the support of 246 MPs, the same number as the opposition. However, if the five independent parties join the opposition, their seat numbers will increase to 251, a simple majority in the lower house. There is growing speculation that opposition MPs may table a no-confidence motion against the government of premier Prayut Chan-o-cha, raising worries over the government's survival.

amazing how baht so strong, governance and protests seem have little impact to it .

little chance government going make the term .

Biggest mistake was keeping prayut PM and having general rolex onboard .
With even bigger crazies at top of army another coup could end up even worse mess ????

This is what can happen when the PM personally hand picks his ministers based on return favours to those who voted for him to become Prime Minister. Ability to do the job didn't come into it.

He didn't have the courage to face the electorate but instead imposed himself into the Palang Pracharat Party where he knew he would be automatically elected as PM so long as he had the support of Party and some duplicitous Democrats who changed allegiances. Those turncoats were rewarded with Ministries for their support.

It appears now he didn't have the nous to realise this might upset a few others. The house of cards is on the verge of collapse.

Let hope it collaps but what your describing about rewarding people with posts that is just Thai style not different from the governments before. You must have been sleeping before because this has happened with practically every government i seen here since i arrived in 2005.

How many of these members got their seats from the EC making up the rules after the election?

In this instance I would urge the PM to look at the "supply and confidence' model employed by the UK Tories and the DUP. Tories supply the money and the DUP supplies the confidence that allows legislation to pass. The PM must note however that the supply must be constant otherwise the confidence can become fickle.

Beginning of the beginning of a new official military only government once again. We are in for the long haul with Prayut. Only thing that will phase him is the day he goes out the door with his feet first, and that will likely take another few decades.

I very much doubt he will ever concede. He's not really in charge anyway, well not as a civillian.  Read the new constitution - the Senate (read Army) has to approve any new PM - regardless of them winning an election.

19 parties coalition with 5 leaving. 14 is not a good omen and sound like “sure die”. Maybe you right. It’s curtains for cha cha and most Thais will be celebrating.
