BANGKOK (NNT) - The dispute about overlapping Agricultural Land Reform Office (ALRO) land rights in Thap Lan National Park, covering many provinces in Nakhon Ratchasima and Na Di district in Prachinburi, has been ongoing for some 20 years.

The Office of the Ombudsman has reached a decision and submitted their verdict to the Prime Minister and related Ministries, urging that the issue to be resolved in 120 days. The ombudsman chief also today visited and held talks with villagers and local authorities.

Chief Ombudsman Gen Viddhavat Rajatanun, during his visit to Khon Buri district, Nakhon Si Thammarat, announced the Office of the Ombudsman’s verdict on complaints regarding the overlapping of land holding rights between villagers and Thap Lan National Park, which covers Wang Nam Khiao, Pak Thong Chai, Khon Buri, and Soeng Sang districts in Nakhon Ratchasima, as well as Na Di district in Prachinburi.

The Office of the Ombudsman last week advised the Prime Minister and Ministers of related ministries to resolve the issue within 120 days after receiving the verdict.

The ombudsman suggested that the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment revises the boundary line of Thap Lan National Park according to the mutual survey undertaken in 2000, the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation consider allowing villagers in the national park area to use the land for occupation according to legal limits, and the Royal Forest Department submit a report to the Minister of Natural Resources and Environment on deteriorated areas, where the protection as national forest reserve will be lifted, allowing the area to be delivered to villagers for legal residency and occupation.
