Hi all

My understanding of this is a bit unclear so if anyone has gone through this and could simplify it would be most appreciated.

My wife's passport(thai) is due to expire,we have an appointment this coming tuesday at the Thai embassy london to renew her passport.

The Embassy informed us not to worry as currently my wife's ILTR visa is stamped in passport which is due to expire.

They have said that a new passport(5 years) will be issued after the fees have been paid.It takes 6-8weeks they tell me to be processed and returned.,papers sent to BKK then sent back to UK.

This is the bit Im unclear about, the thai embassy said that once the pasport is issued and recieved you keep your old passport with the visa in it.Every 5 years renew passport but you keep the original every time.

Simply then, every time she travels back to LOS she takes 2passports old and new(the old for re-entry to uk).

Is it not possible to send both passports to the Uk immigration office and update the passports and simply transfer the visa from the old passport to new.

I would now suspect that yes it is possible but I have no doubts that some stupid amount in fees would apply.

Any advice much appreciated.

What they told you is absolutely correct and what you suspected is also absolutely correct. Best is do what they say until your wife has a British passport. The LTR remains valid although the passport (the travel document) has expired.

Correct, it is possible to transfer a current LTR into a new passport, at a current cost of £150! I haven't checked, but no doubt this is due to be increased along with all the other fees on 1st April.

Save your money and do as the RTE suggest. Simply presenting old and new passports when required.

If she were to apply for British citizenship and a British passport then she would no longer need her LTR stamp. She could simply use her British passport to enter and leave the UK (and Europe and most other places) and her Thai passport to enter and leave Thailand.

many many thanks guys.

the british passport is naturally the next step but with these changes that are happening it seems a little daunting.I will look into it tho, worries me so I dread to thinks how the mrs would be.

Although the Mrs has settled here in the UK like a duck to water reading and writing well thats another story.

If all the questions were money related tho she'd pass with flying colours.

I think its wise for mo to do as RTE says and avoid these costs and stress it would no doubt cause.

thanks again

Yes Delboy, in my opinion this is the best option.

Wife carries two passports all the time, no real hardship.

Also, in my opinion, bite the bullet and go down the route of Citizenship, buy LITUK text book, study hard together testing and questioning all the time, remember it is multiple choice questionaire, and you will get there in the end, if you put in the hard yards.

Good Luck

bite the bullet and go down the route of Citizenship,
Agree, it makes travel in Europe a h_ell of a lot simpler. Elsewhere too.

Also, she'll be able to help kick this current God-awful government out come the next election

Havn't used the passport yet, as we are in the process of applying now, but this is one of the reasons for applying.

As for the present Gov't, I guess we can only hope for a separate sub-forum for that debate. Not only will I not hold my breath for that, I guess it wouldn't be a great idea either.

Red Ken for the Stalking Horse candidatecy and election thereafter:lol:

Good Luck
