A member of my wife's Thai family needs cataract surgery.  He was examined at Rutnin Eye Hospital.  The opthalmologist recommended phacoemulsion with a monofocal intraocular lens at THB 46,500 per eye.  Since the patient also has presbyopia and astigmatism, another option is phacoemulsion with a toric lens at THB 80,000 per eye.  I was not present for the discussion with the opthalmologist, but my understanding is that the presbyopia and astigmatism can be corrected with glasses if not by the IOL.

Is there a reason, either cost or quality, to look beyond Rutnin?  My main concern is safety and effectiveness.  I know that cataracts are pretty routine, but surgery always presents risks.

Are there gotchas to worry about?

Rutinin is top class and play no games with gotchas. I had retina detachment and related cataract surgery done elsewhere, but recently went for a checkup at Rutinin with one of their retina specialists, and he surprisingly discovered a tiny hole in the retina of the other eye. They performed a retina laser treatment to close the hole (all done OP), and the total cost for complete exam and procedure was 11k. And, they advised me of the cost before the procedure. In and out in a few hours.

I have never seen any hospital run as professionally as this one. It is quite small, but attention to detail is extraordinary. Staff are uniformly well trained, the place runs like a clock, and even the restaurant food is very tasty and reasonably priced.

The place runs like a clock, except for the appointment system, expect a three to four hour wait and you won't be disappointed.
